"Music Review - Anthony Wal"

Issue: VOL. 2 - NO. 7 (July 15th - August 14th, 2006)

By: Melody Geear

Anthony Wal’s style is reminiscent of the late 90’s alternative pop rock scene. With such a mix of an infectious rhythmic style, light pop vocals and a wide range of instrumental accompaniment, he takes the prominence of the genre and brings a fresh yet nostalgic feel to the next level. With such bands as Click Five, All-American Rejects and Fountains of Wayne currently dominating the charts, Wal is a comprehensive addition to the new wave alt-pop genre.

One of Wal’s most infectious songs, “Kiss in Rome” reflects the influence of the current pop side of Bon Jovi. A mix of piano, acoustic and electric guitar, drums and even a little tambourine, make for a breezy and flavorful track. This track is closest to his 90’s kin scene, bringing up memories of bands such as Tonic, Counting Crows and Third Eye Blind.

Anthony Wal’s songwriting abilities come out in his track, “Mexico”. This passion for love and comfort can be felt not only through his lyrics but through his rhythmic styling. He creates a sense of longing for another that anyone can relate to. The beautiful and perfectly added Spanish lyrics bring another dimension to this heartfelt song. This bilingual venture is evocative of the Latin crooner, Jon Secada’s presence on the end of the last decade.

It is prominent that Wal likes to stick with the style that he knows best, but his attempt to create a new twist to a once prominent and successful style is worth some well-deserved kudos. It’s not easy to stick out amongst the crowd in today’s pop rock scene, but Wal’s dedication and passion stands out in his music and carries through to his listeners. This singer/songwriter won’t have a problem finding the staying power that he is full-heartedly striving to find.

Bio

This self-motivated individual can be described as a ‘live-wire’ who has no trouble getting people to feel the constant energy he has inside. As a prolific singer/songwriter/composer, he is able to express emotions through his powerful, poignant lyrics and attention-grabbing musical compositions about love, passion, friendship, envy, and almost every other feeling you can imagine! The lyrics of his songs create amazing imagery that enables listeners to visualize the content being described. His writing style can be straightforward or abstract and he is really keen on inventing out-of-the-ordinary expressions. One sure thing is that he doesn’t believe in creating lyrics that completely reveal a story. He would rather have listeners make up their own image about the song’s lyrical description.

Born and raised in Montreal (Quebec), Canada, Anthony Wal grew up listening to various genres of music from different parts of the world. The exposure to this mixture of genres helped formulate his present style of music, which can be described as infectious alternative/pop/rock a la All-American Rejects, Barenaked Ladies, John Mayer, Goo Goo Dolls, Bryan Adams, Jason Mraz, and James Blunt. Other influences include artists such as Bon Jovi, Third Eye Blind, and Counting Crows.

Anthony Wal received a total of 5 nominations at events such as the Orange County Music Awards (2006), All Access Magazine Music Awards (2006), and Los Angeles Music Awards (2006). The categories include Best International, Best Melodic Group/Artist, Best Pop Group/Artist, Artist of the Year, and Male Singer/Songwriter of the Year.

Anthony Wal has performed at a number of studios, clubs, and events in Montreal and Toronto (Canada) and various locations in Italy, Venezuela, and the U.S.
