Bio
After leaving the UK - and a burgeoning solo career - to return to his native Wellington, New Zealand, Kev Fitzsimons didn’t waste too much time in finding a new vehicle for his songs and voice. In 2016, he and four other Wellingtonians formed Anxiety Club.
Their sound was always going to have an Americana bent, but together the group has taken Fitzsimons' songs to unexpected places, incorporating indie, grunge, alternative, pop and electronic influences.
They've arrived at a sound and style not too far removed from Wilco or Ryan Adams, but incorporating other influences like Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, David Bowie, Radiohead and Bruce Springsteen - as well as more contemporary acts like Beach House, The War On Drugs and Dawes.
By the end of 2016, Anxiety Club had released its first EP (“Live at Oceania”). In 2017, they released two singles (including the much loved “Be Still”) and found an audience for their brand of Kiwi alt-country on the back of a series of sold-out live performances across New Zealand.
In winter 2018, they decamped to Blue Barn Studios in Wellington with producer James Goldsmith (Mermaidens, Nadia Reid) to work on the new EP, “Black Heart”.
Release to widespread acclaim in October 2018, 'Black Heart' has been described as an "instant Americana classic" (Chillfiltr.com) and "truly incredible" (muzic.net.nz).
