Biography

April Fish are an alternative duo based in Wellington. They met on Cuba Street towards the end of 2010, where John impressed Katie with his jazz-fused improvisations while busking on his 11-string Warr Guitar.

Combining forces to create a fusion of theatrical vocals, animated piano and solid guitar grooves, April Fish are a lively, up-and-coming act that will leave you wanting more! They recently opened for Amanda Palmer (of The Dresden Dolls) on her 2011 New Zealand tour, and have continued to generate a cult following of their own, both online and at their live shows.

They released their debut EP, Flailing Beautifully, which is available for download at aprilfish.co.nz

All Dolled Up

Written By: Katie Morton

Painted features never come to life
Like Mona Lisa with your eternal smile
Ever staring, shiny marbles for eyes
Forever peering at the same blue skies

What you need, you'll never see
You'll never know, you'll never grow out of your clothes

There's simply no way out
Never, no way, nohow
You're just one face in the crowd
Free will is not allowed

Watching wearily as your garden grows
Quite contrarily right beneath your nose

What you need, you'll never see
You'll never know, you'll never grow out of your clothes

There's simply no way out
Never, no way, nohow
You're just one face in the crowd
Free will is not allowed

Dressed up, dolled up, made up, round up, lined up in order
It's time to grow up, to show up, to own up, to pay up now

What you need, you'll never see
You'll never know, you'll never grow out of your clothes

There's simply no way out
Never, no way, nohow
You're just one face in the crowd

Free will is not allowed

Move Away

Written By: Katie Morton

I don’t fit with you
I’ve got another plan
No thing I could say or do would help you understand

Oh hello, this is how I pass my time
When you’re not around
Tread with care or you might get ensnared

I don’t fit with you
I’ve got to move away
No thing you could say or do would make me want to stay

Oh hello, this is where I pass my time
You are in my bounds
Tread with care or you might get ensnared, dangling upside-down

You’ve made it clear you don’t go where you can’t redecorate
I’m not afraid to send you away because you can’t relate
You tried to move me around to suit your every whim
I will not let you stay, contorting my limbs every-which-way

This is where I pass my time
You are in my bounds
This is how I pass my time

I’ve got to move away

No Safer Place

Written By: Katie Morton

You swore there was no safer place than under the covers
Curled up, you'd hide from the night in the darkest place on earth

You closed your eyes
Images that terrorise, illuminated in the night
Did soon arise, uninvited

And now you're desperately trying to rearrange all the pillows in a shape that just might keep the goblins at bay for just one night
To get some sleep tonight

You swore there was no better way to stay out of danger
Locked up, away from the crowd and safety in numbers

You closed your eyes
Images that terrify, ferocious and uncivilised
Did soon arrive, uninvited

And now you're desperately trying to rearrange all the pillows in a shape that just might keep the goblins at bay for just one night
To rest your head this time

You're never alone
You'll never be alone

You closed your eyes
Images that terrify, ferocious and uncivilised
Did soon arrive, uninvited

And now you're desperately trying to rearrange all the pillows in a shape that just might keep the goblins at bay for just one night
To rest your head, to get some sleep tonight
