Biography

April’s songs have been placed in primetime network television, cable television, advertising, as institutional themes, and indie recordings. April has performed as a soloist and band artist on cable and national television programs, as well as various live stages in New York City, Los Angeles and Nashville.

After performing as an acoustic soloist for several years, April formed an original power pop/rock band, in her name, in New York City, releasing an album titled “Dancin’ Thru The Mine Fields," co-produced by DANIEL WISE (Joan Osborne, Scissor Sisters, Maceo Parker). April's band performed in all the major NYC rock clubs. Her next release was a solo album of original adult contemporary songs titled “Watercolors Fade," which she co-produced with STEVE SKINNER (Rent, Celine Dion, Jewel), and which title cut was recently chosen as a featured single on the popular reality TV show Dance Mom’s and its accompanying soundtrack. April's 2010 self-produced pop/rock/adult album release "Unpainting Portraits" is a collection of personal, yet commercially-viable, emotionally-charged original songs which achieved several placements in network and cable TV. 2013 brings in April’s newest release "Forever's Not Long Enough” EP produced by hit writer/arranger/producer/conductor KATHY SOMMER (Halestorm, Shinedown, Daughtry, and more) assisted by accomplished guitarist/engineer MATT ANTHONY, which is a collection of contemporary and radio-worthy uplifting songs of love and self-empowerment.

As an artist, April’s high-octane range-driven vocal performances have been characterized as “powerful, yet vulnerable," and likened to Ann Wilson of Heart, Kelly Clarkson, and Paula Cole, by industry professionals and peers. Her strong vocal performances coupled with the emotional, heartfelt, and commercial yet indie-based elements of her style of music and lyrics, reminiscent of Christina Perri, Sara Bareilles, and Kelly Clarkson, is elegant, intimate and empowering.

As a composer and lyricist, April was honored in New York City with an Abe Oleman Scholarship from the National Academy of Popular Music and BMI, and has written with several top hit songwriters in pop and country.

April’s vision of writing songs with a universal message of living authentically and honoring oneself and others has remained unshakable over the years. April’s songs are currently airing on network and cable TV, online radio, and in European retail and have been charted in the top 10 on SoundClick.com and Women Of Substance Radio on Live365.com. April continues to write and shop material to radio and film/TV projects internationally.

Lyrics

Unless You Want It That Way

Written By: April Higuera

I walk down to the hidden river
And I see you here alone
I watch you lie under the water
Where you can dream just for so long
And I want to ask you questions
Just like many times before
I throw in that old rope ladder
You still ignore, and I know what for
You can see the colors in the liquid sky
You can hear your heart beat in the silent tide

Well, I’ll stand here and wait
‘Til you can’t hold your breath any longer
And I’ll keep sayin’ it
‘Til I’m blue in the face
You make your own fate
Don’t have to give up your dreams for anyone
Unless you want it that way

Like your mother, you are a gardener
Perfect roses hide prison walls
I am a flower born in springtime
A bit of hope, a seed you sowed
Can you be yourself in the deep still waves
Can you feel any love that you have saved

I’ll stand here and wait
‘Til you can’t hold your breath any longer
And I’ll keep sayin’ it
‘Til I’m blue in the face
You make your own fate
Don’t have to give up your dreams for anyone
Unless you want it that way

I stand here and criticize you
And you just smile and hug me
You teach me that lovin’ you means
You don’t have to change
Unless you want it that way

Even Love Gets Lonely

Written By: April Higuera/Aurea Suarez/Laura Fissinger

How can I stop the rain, outside my window
A million tears run down the reflection I see
You’re lying next to me but inside we’re miles apart

I’ll open the window so you’ll hear the thunder
‘Cause I can’t survive another silent storm
Are you listening? Can you hear me crying out?

Even Love Gets Lonely
I feel like a stranger in your arms
Even Love Gets Lonely
And when the light’s on, we’re still in the dark

Words lose their meaning
And the touch that said so much is quiet now
I know love is blind, but we can’t be too blind to see, that

Even Love Gets Lonely
I feel like a stranger in your arms
Even Love Gets Lonely
And when the light’s on, we’re still in the dark

Tell me what you’re going through
Are you lonely? Are you lonely too? Oh, oh

[chorus]

NoOneElseBelongsHere

Written By: April Higuera/Dean Landon/Anika Paris

In these moments
When I’m with you I pull away
I get angry
‘bout this fee-ling that I can’t explain

I’m losing now
stories spinning in my head
twist me inside out

Why do I dance around the truth
The picture of my life without you
Is just a faded photograph
sweet memories I’d never have
can’t live my life in black and white
I can’t keep pushing you aside
I know I’m acting like a fool
no one else belongs here more than you

On the edge of a broken heart
Can’t be afraid of what we started
I’m gonna jump off into the dark
And trust that I can fly

I’m gaining ground
I know that it’s been hard on you
But I won’t turn back now

I won’t dance around the truth
The picture of my life without you
Is just a faded photograph
sweet memories I’d never have
I won’t live my life in black and white
I won’t keep pushing you aside
I’ve been acting like a fool
no one else belongs here more than you
no one else belongs here more than you
In these moments
When I’m with you I pull away

Unpainting Portraits

UNPAINTING PORTRAITS
C 2009 April Higuera

Bright sunshine
Nor turpentine
Can burn the image away
There’s still black
And there’s still blue
The picture is faded
But I can still see me and you

And I can’t go back
Those mem’ries are torture
It felt so bad
Let’s keep moving forward
I’m not mad, just
No time to look back
I’m busy unpainting portraits like that

Hopeful smiles
hung on the wall
I always wanted something real
Close the can
Rinse the brush
We don’t have to keep telling
That old story ‘bout the two of us

I can’t go back
Those mem’ries are torture
We were sad
Let’s keep moving forward
I’m not mad, just
No time to look back
I’m busy unpainting portraits like that

Let’s unpaint the portrait we had
No more family portraits like that

We can’t go back
Why relive the torture
I’m so glad
That we keep moving forward
All we have
Is right here before us
Let’s keep unpainting the portraits like that

Giant

Written By: April Higuera

GIANT
C 2009 April Higuera

Just let me think
From under this rock
From under your thumb
I could be someone
Just let me reach
Up to the sun and the heavens
Never say never
One day I’ll be clever, and …

SoTall
And strong
Like a giant
So Tall
And strong
Like a giant

What would you think
Could you believe
I could climb out of
This hole that I’ve dug so deep
I would be flying
If I were a pilot
Too many years on my knees
I’m getting up on two feet

So Tall
And strong
Like a giant
So Tall
And strong
Like a giant

I’ll be as big as I please
I’m gonna stand up
And look down
On tall trees

So Tall
Like a giant
So Tall
And Strong
So Tall

No Regrets

Written By: April Higuera

I left footprints in the past
But as I stand here
the tide washes them away
There’s nothing out there to grasp
‘Cause everything
Is here and now staring me in the face

CHORUS:
And my heart is alive
Don’t care about time
Or the lies in my head
I been there all of my life
But not here yet
I find the love that I need
The more that I breathe
And the more I stretch
To pick up the pieces of me
There’s no regrets
Just precious pearls that time compressed

Morning fog obscures the sea
Reminding me
that beauty lays in wait
For ever-present eyes to see
There’s no fear
‘Cause darkness can’t shine in the light of the day

CHORUS

BRIDGE:
I’m gonna live my life with no illusions
No time for the past or future
It’s all right here and now

CHORUS 3:
I’m outta of my mind
It’s about time
Getting outta my head
I’ve been there all of my life
All of my life
I’m ready to fly
My heart is alive
My heart is alive
Not wasting any more time
Not wasting any more time

OUTTRO:
No regret
No regrets . . . just the here and the now . . . no regrets . . .

I Don't Care

Written By: April Higuera

We could make this all complicated
Me and you
Nothing’s so overrated
Like the simple truth
We got love to share
Why should we care

Nobody’s right and nobody’s gone
Just getting’ out to breath some air
Nobody’s sayin’ we won’t last long
You feel so good
I’ll take it any way that you can give it
I don’t care

We’d try and find something safer
If we believed those fools
Or we can put pen to paper
And write our simple truth
We got it all right here
What should we fear

Nobody’s right and nobody’s gone
Just getting’ out to breath some air
Nobody’s sayin’ we won’t last long
You feel so good
I’ll take it any way that you can give it
I don’t care

[solo]
We don’t know our way down this road
Still we can’t be afraid to go

[chorus out]

Your Voice

Written By: April Higuera

It’s hard letting go of
Something we held so strong
Why say that we’re not right
Just because some things went wrong

Did you really give up
On a lifetime of love
It’s so hard to be tough
I didn’t wanna break up
Tell me you’re not ashamed
To have loved me that way
My head’s so full of noise
Just wanna hear your voice

Your voice
Just wanna hear your voice

How can you just leave
And not even talk to me
For so long we’ve been best friends
And we said we would be ‘til the end

Maybe you can’t let go
And you can’t let me know
Or you’re glad you’re alone
Why don’t you pick up the phone
You said we’d try it again
In a few months and then
Didn’t give me a choice
Just wanna hear your voice

Your voice
Just wanna hear your voice

SOLO
BR: I know we wanted to be free
There’s free to let go and free to try again

It’s just you and me, my love
The baggage can be left behind
We’ve traveled a long road
And maybe we’re so close this time

Gave our power away
Turned to anger and blame
We forgot why we came
Baby don’t run away
Then our dream can’t come true
All the magic eludes
All the promises void
Just wanna hear your voice

Your voice
Just wanna hear your voice

Heartland

Written By: April Higuera

I can’t lie
You know I’ve tried
To live a life with sand beneath my feet
Every night
Comes high tide
And washes out the ground from under me
I’ve been tethered to a surfboard
Tethered to a rock wall
I’m climbing to a ledge where I can see, that…
There’s freedom in my heart
I just have to get there
There’s forgiveness if I start
Letting myself rest there
I’ve sailed the coastal waters
I’ve hiked up from the canyons
Now I’m going for it
Running toward the heartland
Soon I’ll be living in the heartland

Dig a hole
Touch my soul
And mine the gold that’s buried deep
All my life
I’ve stood by
And let you all define what I could be
I’ve been tethered to the wrong goals
Tethered to the comforts of home
Up ahead’s a clearing and I can see, that…
There’s freedom in my heart
I just have to get there
There’s forgiveness if I start
Letting myself rest there
I’m climbing jagged mountains
and crossing muddy waters
And I’m going for it
Running toward the heartland
Soon I’ll be living in the heartland

I’m heading straight into the center
I know that I begin and end where
Love is all that I can see
All that I can breathe

There’s freedom in my heart
I just have to get there
There’s forgiveness if I start
Letting myself rest there
I can see the open fields
Let my heart be revealed
Yeah I’m going for it
Running toward the heartland

Naked Truth

Written By: April Higuera

We been ready for this talk I know
We been headin’ to this crossroad right here
There’s only ever two ways to go
We can choose to take the road of love
Or fear
You and I have wasted a lot of time
Let’s uncomplicate this

Let’s get naked, basic
Stripping down ‘til we can hide the truth
Let’s not hold back on that
Deeper meaning we’ve been wading through
No more shallow point of view
Let’s reveal the naked truth
(I wanna feel the naked truth)

Doesn’t work to play it safe
We both need to find that place inside
We’re only really making love
When we’re feeling safe enough to laugh
And cry
You and I wasted a lot of time
Covering up all that we could be

Let’s get naked, basic
Stripping down ‘til we can hide the truth
Let’s not hold back on that
Deeper meaning we’ve been wading through
No more shallow point of view
Let’s reveal the naked truth…oh yeah
I wanna feel the naked truth…oh yeah

Let’s get naked, basic
Stripping down ‘til we can hide the truth
Let’s not hold back on that
Deeper meaning we’ve been wading through
No more shallow point of view
Let’s reveal the naked truth…oh yeah
I wanna feel the naked truth…yeah
I wanna get to know you
I wanna get to know you
