"Ground Hog Dat into Summer"

Enter the groundhog, sweating profusely. Just a few days ago it felt as if winter would never end. Now it seems as if someone fast-forwarded the clock past spring. Bare tree branches getting sunburned in the haze. Widespread stickiness. Hot subway platforms, hot car seats, hot sidewalks.

Yesterday afternoon, a 74-year-old woman sat on a bench in the little park at Kings Highway and Ocean Avenue in Brooklyn. She wore a Russian magazine on her head in a vain attempt to keep cool. Across from her sat her home health attendant, a woman from Russia who would only give her first name, Galina. ''Warm weather is good,'' Galina said. ''Hot weather not good.''

Also working up a good sweat, on the paddleball court at Marine Park in Brooklyn, was Hal Korcarz, a 57-year-old accountant. He wore no shirt.

''Today's the first day I've taken it off,'' said Mr. Korcarz. Noting the early date, he added, ''That indicates it's going to be a very hot summer.''

His doubles partner, Lois Cohen, a retired schoolteacher, said sudden seasonal transition had become the rule rather than the exception.

''This has been going on for 15 years,'' said Ms. Cohen, 67-year-old dynamo in a Michael Jordan T-shirt who said she has won the Budweiser Paddleball Classic three times. ''It's been going straight from winter to summer. Do you know anyone who still has a spring jacket?''

Ms. Cohen reminded one of her just-vanquished opponents, Joseph Ardigo, 56, of a song he had written, ''Summertime in Brooklyn.'' Mr. Ardigo, the supervisor of the park, obliged with an a cappella performance. ''Children playing in the street,'' he crooned. ''Mamas and the papas sitting outside on the stoop, drinking ice cold tea. Get out your old beach chair, it's time for having fun. It's time for getting down in the sun. Summertime, summertime in Brooklyn.''

Last week, Mr. Ardigo sent a recording of the song to Marty Markowitz, the borough president, with the hope that it would become Brooklyn's official summer anthem
