Arête Quartet (pronounced uh-RETT) is the musical brainchild of Joel Litwin (Erin Corday, Bossa 31, Incendio) and Steve Jones (Rumors of the Big Wave, Yambique, Obá Obá).
Arête Quartet is a groove-oriented acid jazz ensemble, borrowing from downtempo, straight ahead jazz, funk, nu jazz, Brazilian and other styles. Deep grooves and simple, melodic horn lines make for an entrancing sonic atmosphere.
Arête Quartet pulls from the top jazz and funk players in the Pacific Northwest, including trumpeter Dave Carter (Wayne Horvitz, Bill Frisell, Pearl Jam), keyboardist Josh Rawlings (Macklemore, Industrial Revelation) and guest artist Bill Anschell (Floyd Standifer, Ziggurat Quartet) to create an exceptional ensemble, capable of amazing subtlety and improvisation. Its members work together as a single organism, flexing and turning, all the while musical and poignant. Influences include Amon Tobin, MMW, Thievery Corporation, Nicola Conte, Miles Davis, Les Hommes, et.al.
