Bio

Pete Hickman was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne 13th May 1983. He grew up living abroad as a result of his father’s work, living in both Brazil and Holland before his family returned to the UK at the end of 1988. This early travel has been a significant awakening to shared and disparate cultural values and a great source of inspiration and influence.

At an early age he showed a very keen interest in music playing both the piano and violin at a young age. At 11 he developed his great interest in playing the guitar and after teaching himself to play his mother’s acoustic, had his first electric guitar when he was 12. His urge to write was immediate and his enthusiasm led to him forming his first band when he was just 13. He played in many different groups through out his teens, including being a rhythm guitarist, Vocalist and a drummer, varying from Pop Indie to Heavy Rock, Punk to Grunge, to avant guard prog rock. Pete's influence's have included the likes of Neil Young, Pearl Jam, Flaming Lips, Yann Tiersan and classical legend Ravi Shankar

His most recent band to date was “Nixon”, with which he had played regularly in Manchester (Roadhouse, Night & Day) and Liverpool (Barfly, Cavern). Nixon’s demo was admirably reviewed in the Manchester online music magazine.

“Its pretty awesome. If these kids were from Texas, they’d be on MTV”

After the band split up, Pete decided to spend some time travelling and working throughout New Zealand and SE Australia. Pete continued to play whilst being away performing in some of the open mic nights in Auckland, New Zealand. Having the time away from the central thrust of music gave Pete the opportunity to consider the direction he now wanted to take his music.

Since returning from his travels, Pete has been working on his solo project ‘The Art Compressive Dross’, both writing material and regularly performing in Liverpool. Pete has performed for the local university’s live radio show in Wrexham and has played a few out door festival shows in Wrexham and Liverpool. His plans for the near future include continuing to vary and extend his performance venues and starting work on recording an album/EP, which will involve sitar player Nick Able who is taught by Ravi Shankar. Nick is also performing in Ravi Shankar's current world tour. There is an Ireland tour, which Pete will be playing, in August/September. Also for the future it looks like there will be a small European tour later next year organised by promotional company 'Shot Organisation'.
