"Exclusive Chat with Asha Sing"

We spoke with this up-and-coming star last year. The leaps and bounds she's taken since then have left us stunned! Asha Sing just released her first music video, and we got to chat exclusively about that as well as her upcoming EP.
As a featured co-writer for Daddy Yankee's hit song, 'Lose Control,' and a backup singer and dancer for Shakira at the Premios Juventud in 2010, Asha Sing started to make a name for herself.

DH!: So you just produced your very first music video! How was that?

Asha Sing: It was a really cool experience– the hair, the makeup, the lights, the camera– it was my first time doing the whole thing. My dad, my sister, and my mom were there helping out with every aspect.

DH!: How did you form the vision for the video?

Asha: Brandon Coton, the art director of Interactive Media at Power 96.5 helped out. He's very creative in what he wants to do. There are three components; the lyrics, the graphic design, and then fans sent in pictures for the hook of the chorus.

One special photo was from my cousin Sam after he had passed away from leukemia in his early 20s. It was him in his hospital bed on his last birthday.

DH!:Wow very personal meaning to this song, then. It sounds quite significant.

Asha: The message is just pushing through, hoping for the best, and being positive about your situation. The story in the song is about a personal experience with a tough relationship I had endured.

DH!: It sounds very powerful. Will this song be included on your upcoming EP?

Asha: Yes, the EP includes We Can Make It, along with three other originals and then two English/Hindu fusion covers. We're holding a competition for others to contribute a fusion piece that will be included on the EP, as well.

DH!: Wow, you are keeping your fans involved with everything; love that! It's remarkable to see how far you've come since we last talked about a year ago.

Asha: Last time I talked to you, I was just in the developing stages of meeting with my producer, and then I spent that summer in Nashville. We had no songs at the time, and for two weeks, I spent every day and every night in the studio, and we came out with four songs, one of which was this one-- We Can Make It. That was last December. I have a fusion look now-- a lot of high-waisted shorts and Gaga-tops. Very Indian, very American, purposely fused together like that. That was something I didn't have before-- an image.

It is extraordinary to see Asha Sing grow as an artist and a musician, and doing so with such grace. We can't wait to listen to the EP when it's released. As for the remix competition, any DJs and musicians interested in being featured should definitely keep an eye out for this great opportunity to be a part of Asha Sing's new EP.

Check out her brand new-- first ever-- music video for 'We Can Make It' below!

"Introducing Asha Sing: The Indian Shakira. Just Better"

You know that feeling when you unwittingly hear something fresh and your ears instantly prick up to the sound, enticing you towards it? We don’t know if you know exactly what we’re talking about, but here at Desi Music Xpress we just had that very moment while stumbling across this brand new singing sensation on the internet; she goes by the name of Asha Sing and she’s all the way across the pond residing in the United States in Florida. All we have to say right now is thank God for social media because without it, we might never have found her (…yet, anyway)!

The newly turned 21-year-old Asha Sing must be utilising that wonderful Miami sunshine in a great way, as her voice is one that kind of creates its own sunshine when listened to: slightly cheesy yes, but very true. Being dubbed as the ‘Indian Shakira’, Asha grew up with many musical influences around her with much of that coming from her Christian background, with church singing and choir becoming quite an integral part of her life. Aged 10 she began training in classical music and took opera lessons, while actively throwing herself into the arts side of school life, performing in a number of musical shows throughout her years there. She not only sings, but also writes her own music and is skilled in playing a number of musical instruments, reinforcing the fact that this is a young lady who was born with music running through her veins.
Drawing on the Shakira reference, an interesting fact about this young American Desi is the fact that she has actually been a backing singer and dancer for the worldwide Latino-Colombian superstar herself, but we guess having that small taste of the bigtime fuelled her to push herself further which is why the vivacious beauty is now beginning out on her journey of making her own musical mark. Performing alongside Shakira helped Asha to recognise the style of music she wanted to create and where she wanted to go with it, bringing together the two cultures she was brought up with into one stunning mashup of sound and language. A sound that is definitely ‘American-Desi’ or for the sake of this blog, ‘Urban-Desi’ if you will.

So, being new to the game completely, let’s talk about the music she has created thus far as her introduction into a scene which may not be ready for what she’s about to bring.
As she has only just started out properly, we weren’t really expecting to hear any original material from her yet, but the remixes and covers we’ve heard we must say we are impressed by.

The first track we stumbled across was her ‘Usher/Devdas Remix’, a song on which Stephen Swartz’ production caught us pretty much straight away; an electronica dance-infused beat with spicy Indian influences thrown artistically throughout, fast in places and mellow in others. As expected from the basic title of the song, the track hears Asha mash up the hauntingly beautiful song ‘Silsila Ye Chahat Ka’ from the legendary Bollywood film ‘Devdas’, with the vocals of a song that is on the completely opposite side of the spectrum, prince of R’n’B Usher’s ‘Scream’. To be honest starting out, the pronunciation of the Hindi within the song can be quite off-putting as it’s very Westernised and not traditionally Desi, but the quality of her actual vocals kept us gripped to the point where you overlook this; you’re just listening to pure, quality music regardless of accents and pronunciations. When it comes to the R’n’B in the song, this is where Asha definitely comes into her own displaying a strong voice, with a rawness that is smooth and controlled. This is the kind of voice we can definitely see ourselves listening to on the radio in a couple of years time or so.
Hearing this, we wanted to hear more which found us on her Soundcloud page where just around a month ago she’d posted her remix of Usher and David Guetta’s ‘Without You’ mixed up with the title song from Bollywood movie ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’. Now we’ve got to admit, this one in particular we are loving!
Starting this time with the R’n’B song, Asha’s voice is distinctively beautiful drawing the listener into a world of acoustic sounds and strong, compelling vocals. Once again, the Hindi pronunciation isn’t fantastic and is something she clearly needs to concentrate on if wanting to pursue this sound, but as we already said you kind of forget this as you become deeper rooted in the track itself, her vocals and the production. What’s great to hear from Asha is the fact she makes each song she uses in her remixes her own; she has the kind of talent that when singing another artist’s song you could easily be led to believe it’s her own. Fresh, beautiful and clearly determined we’re glad to see that Asha has surfaced; even if it was a chance stumbling across her on Twitter. She’s slowly making her mark in America and we’re sure after hearing what she has to offer, her supporters will increase in number here in the UK too.

Apparently, next month sees Asha release her first original d - Desi Music Xpress

Bio

Asha Sing’s first single “Mercy” not only broke the stereotype of Indian artists and bridged the gap between Bollywood and Hollywood but also debuted at the #7 spot on Billboard’s Hot Single Sales Chart. This American-born Desi-raised girl is uniting Eastern and Western cultures through her fusion of Bollywood and American Pop music.

During high school Asha embraced opportunities to refine her talent. She received recognition for her voice when she competed at the world famous Apollo Theater Amateur Talent Competition in Harlem, NY and placed second by taking a daring step and performing Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.” Noise erupted in the local media world as she was then featured in the Miami Herald, Plantation Forum, and the South Asian Times. This win caught the attention of agent Shirley Faison, and Asha was immediately signed with the Carson Adler Casting Agency in New York.

Summer 2010 changed the name of the game when Asha received the opportunity to be a back-up dancer and singer for Shakira at the Premios Juventud 2010 in Miami, FL performing the World Cup song Waka Waka. She recalls, “Being on stage with Shakira and experiencing first-hand how her cultural background influenced her music hit me. I knew after that weekend it was my culture and ethnicity that was going to help me stand apart.” Asha quickly began to formulate her vision of bringing the Bollywood culture to America and gave birth to her fusion of music when she met Grammy winning Producer Paul Ebersold.

The two worked together at Studio Kitchen in Nashville, TN to create four stellar tracks to reflect this vision. The first single “Mercy” was released on August 13, 2013 along with a music video to “Mercy (Daniel Simmons Remix).” To create a collaboration that had an infectious beat, sassy message, and catchy dubstep feel, Asha teamed up with California dance company Bollywood America to create the visual that has now been viewed over 500,000 times - on Vevo.

This multi talented young American with roots in India is now a part of the BMI family along with fellow South Asian Artists A.R Rehman and Jay Sean, as she works to establish herself in the songwriting community. Asha recently was able to exercise her songwriting chops while working with Daddy Yankee to write his single “Lose Control” featuring Emelee. The song was featured on MTV’s show Washington Heights as well as on VH1’s Hit The Floor.

Never slowing down, Asha released her sophomore single "Satellite," an upbeat and thriving summer tune in August, 2014 on PopCrush. Immediately following Asha embarked on her "Be Unique Tour" during the 2014-2015 school calendar year where she travelled to South Florida elementary, middle and high schools sharing her story and inspiring young minds to go after their dreams. Closing out 2014 with a bang, Asha performed at the Y100 Jingle Ball alongside Jake Miller, Meghan Trainor, Rixton and more.
