Biography

ASHES are a straight-up rock band from Sydney. Five guys who came together through their love of big riffs and hooky melodies, and their reverence for the decades of Australian rock that have preceded them. Ashes are Raj Wakeling on lead vocals, Chris Smithers and Scott Best on guitars, Kurtis Veness on bass, and Matt Perriman on Drums.

Ashes came together at the end of 2010, and the end of an era for Raj, Chris, and Matt. With their previous project Me vs. You disbanded, the trio were looking to toss aside the heavier influences that had tied them down for so long, and begin a project that embraced their roots in Australian rock. Kurtis and Scott were soon brought into the fold, and the band set to work creating their new sound.

Produced by Dave Hammer, the self-titled EP is the result of a year’s worth of persistent writing and recording. Through 2011, Ashes played a limited number of shows as they workshopped songs and realised their identity within Australia’s music landscape. The result is an EP that is loud, catchy, and just a little whimsical.

Lyrically, the EP is a celebration of the dysfunction that defines so many interactions. Coupled with songs about little more than trying to be something better than you are now, an enduring positivity prevails.
