"Ashleigh Mannix@ Redback Records Wollongong"

By BMA Sitemanager - Scott Layne • Jul 24th, 2008 • Category: 306 24 Jul 2008, Gig Reviews, Reviews

Canberra local Ashleigh Mannix kicked off an impromptu gig in Wollongong for the independent record store Redback Records. And has this young musician improved and developed I’ll say. I first saw Ashleigh at UC a couple of years ago and then later saw her perform at Stage 88 just before Something for Kate. Ashleigh has a vocal capacity that defies her slight stature and her fresh sharp voice set the tone for the day. This girl is definitely one to look out for. She played songs from her EP, simply titled My First EP as well as some new material, commanding the respect of the slowly growing crowd. Putting in a 45 minute set, her songs and style certainly did not disappoint - she showed real star potential with just her voice and her songs. A girl and her guitar, a beautiful acoustic concert; any other arrangement might just have ruined the whole thing. Major kudos to her for doing the hard yards with live performances like this. - BMA Magazine

Hailing from a geographical and cultural mix that takes in both the ACT and NSW’s South Coast.

Ashleigh Mannix has recently emerged as a bright young singer/songwriter and natural solo performer, consistently embraced by fans, peers and audiences alike, both locally and overseas.

Ashleigh picked up her first guitar at the age of 11, a few years later adding to this musical experience with her own voice. In the years that followed Ashleigh has molded her musical self and soul writing, travelling largely solo, and in particular with her dynamic live performances. She has created an expanding library of songs that channel her disarming honesty and a warm charisma that infects and leaves audiences all over converted.

A unique relationship with global surf company Billabong has allowed Ashleigh to independently pursue her musical ambitions as far as she can, winning audiences in Australia, US, UK, Canada, Finland, Europe, Fiji and recently Mount Fuji Rock in Japan.

Ashleigh's musical pursuit also led her to form a creative partnership with renowned producer TimE bandit Powles, (the church, iOTA) beginning with the production on her debut EP, aptly titled ‘My First EP’. The result has been a stunning and eclectic debut, more of a compact album than an EP.

Released in Australia through MGM ,‘My First EP’ shines and smoulders from start to end, both youthful and rootsy beyond her years, Ashleigh’s voice has centre stage, with all the accompanying instruments and arrangements taking tasteful 2nd place, including her own nifty acoustic guitar . Recorded quickly, and full of spontaneity and exuberance, this recording invites endless repeated listening. Its a mini classic from one of Australia’s most promising artists.

"Ashleigh Mannix has all the ingredients to be a successful singer-songwriter" - Sunday Telegraph

Currently exploring new music with guitarist and writing partner Richie Harris, Ashleigh is looking forward to recording her debut album late in 2008.
