"Canadian Music Week to Feature Glen Cairn Artist"

Ashley Crnic to play C’est What on March 22

Canadian Music Week to feature Glen Cairn artist. Ashley Crnic, a Glen Cairn singer and songwriter, will be performing in Toronto during Canadian Music Week. She will play the stage at C’est What on March 22. File A Glen Cairn musician will be performing in Toronto during Canadian Music Week.

Acoustic singer and songwriter Ashley Crnic will hit the stage at C’est What on March 22 as one of the acts during the week-long festival, running from March 19 to 24.

“I’ve been honoured by getting picked as one of the artists,” said Crnic. “I’m nervous and terrified and excited at the same time.”

The 31st annual event focuses on the business of music, bringing together entertainers, producers, record label executives and fans. It features conferences, workshops, a film festival and six nights of live performances in more than 60 venues, featuring 1,000 bands and artists.

“It’s a big step up from last year. They invited me as an artist guest last year to check out the conference,” she said. “I think they’re taking me a little more seriously this year, which is why they’re giving me that shot to play live.

“I’m getting that chance to showcase for the right people.”

She’ll be performing on the same night as big-name artist Metric.

“Metric is actually playing the same night in one of the bigger venues,” Crnic said, who will perform at 9 p.m. “It’s really cool to be in the same time frame as a big artist.”

Crnic, who is originally from the Hamilton area, said she’s hoping to turn out a good-sized crowd.

“I’m going to bring it,” she said. “(I will) play the best show I can but also have fun. There’s got to be a wow factor.”

Crnic added she’s hoping to meet the members of Heart, which include sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson.

“They have an interview on Thursday at the downtown Marriott. I would love to go to that,” said Crnic, adding lead singer Ann is one of her idols.

“Man can she sing. If I could train with anyone, I’d love to learn from her.”

Ashley Crnic hails from Canada and this is her debut album. Opener "How Much" sees her use her dynamic voice to a powerful tune. It's an engaging beginning. "Round Trip" is a rocker with an assured vocal and a dynamic sense of pace. Crnic really knows how to make her presence known.

"The Messenger" is a thrilling song with a cool, controlled vocal lead. It's a powerful statement that proves the singer's talent well. "Back to you" is a slower moment, Crnic singing softer and with a great deal of soul. It's a startlingly mature and affecting debut. - Anna Maria Stjarnell

"Immediately arresting, Crnic’s power chords and anthem like pop-rock tunes are heads and shoulders above the usual suspects hitting the music charts today. There’s just the right balance of spunky attitude and emotional charge that carries every song to dizzying heights."

BARRIE - Singer and songwriter Ashley Crnic will take over The Mansion on Saturday night.
Crnic promise an intimate but up-beat show.
“It’s a high energy show, but it’s just me on the stage,” she said. “I play from the heart. I think of it as a jam session with an audience.”
Crnic, who grew up in Hamilton, first hit the stage at age six as part of a Croatian folklore group.
“I have been singing since I have been speaking really,” she said. “But the folklore group was the first time had to learn to read music and do the whole orchestral thing.”
She started taking singing lessons at age 10. She learned a number of different styles, however it was pop and rock that really grabbed her attention.
“I did it all. Blues, jazz, broadway, even opera, but popular music was my favourite,” she said. “I started singing a lot of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.”
Crnic said she always knew she wanted to be a singer, and she’d taken piano lessons, but one day she decided she wanted to be a rock star.
“I picked up a guitar at 16,” she said. “I had an uncle who was a musician and he gave me a piece of junk guitar. I fixed it up and he wanted it back.”
As for The Mansion show, she will be performing songs off her debut album Full Grown, including the latest single How Much.
