Grand Rapids Arts Festival 2007

Grand Rapids Press
Article by John Sinkevics

Ashley Grutter

When: 12:55 p.m.Clock Tower Stage

Why: "American Idol," pshaw. It
can't compare to The Press' "Festival
Idol" competition of 2003. Sand
Lake's Ashley Grutter and bro, Zack,
won that contest as teens with an
infectious, country-tinged set. Now
Ashley is a seasoned, 20-year-old
college graduate, singer-songwriter
and multi-instrumentalist who plans
to split her time between Michigan
and Nashville. Today, she'll perform
songs from an upcoming album,
which features "an eclectic mixture"
of folk-rock, country and the blues.
"All of my music cannot be
categorized in one specific genre,"
she says. "I do what feels right at the
time." Consider this a great
opportunity to catch a star on the
rise. - Grand Rapids Press

Bio

Me?

I write about life, death, love, and everything in between. Heartbreak, sunshine, funerals, new shoes, bad hair days, injustice, toilet paper--or lack thereof, joy, lost keys, Pepsi, Skittles, brothers, Mom's advice, good friends and family, running late, kiwi, kisses on Dagget Road, dressing rooms, Ramen Noodles. They are like photographs that stay stuck in my head for better or for worse. Some days I think it’s a curse. Other days I feel blessed.

It is perplexing to me how these pieces of everything I see, hear, and feel eventually spill out of me and land as ink. I stare at the blank page and search my mind for a way to make the photographs fit as words. Sometimes the answers just come, sparked by emotion and land deftly on the page. But most of the time the words come, not pretty like a puzzle, but more like a collage. Collectively they hope to say something important, meaningful, memorable. I stick them together using glue, a stapler, and some luck.

Do I do this to escape? It’s plausible. I lead a very ordinary life. Right now, I work a 9 to 5 job in addition to writing, recording and performing, which means I’m your average financially challenged artist. I love the people in my life, even if we sometimes drive each other crazy. I tend to laugh rather than cry. They say laughter is good for you. I don’t know who they are, but I hope they are right. I always try to do the right thing, though sometimes right is hard to define. I am emotional but tend not to express myself outwardly in an overly dramatic way, unless of course I am singing--that’s when my emotions are raw and unchained.

I like to think it's more than mere escape. I like to think it is because I love to connect with others in a way I couldn’t otherwise connect with them in my everyday life. Music drives those photographs, those memories that are stuck in my head, down to my heart where I can feel them beating. Thump thump, thump. For a few minutes we communicate as one, the storyteller and the listener…life is good. Then the song ends, and I feel compelled to share again. I need to. I want to. For you, for me. I won’t drag you kicking and screaming, but I hope to drag you nevertheless.

Thanks for listening.

Ashley

Ashley is a 22 year-old singer/songwriter from West Michigan. She started singing when she was 10 years old and was soon singing at fairs, festivals, and many other events. At 13 years old she made it to the National Semi-Finals of the Colgate Country Showdown in Fairmont MN. Local radio stations and newspapers started taking notice and soon she was being interviewed on many radio stations and newspapers.

She has opened for country artists such as The Wilkinsons, Connie Smith, and Aaron Lines. Soon after her success in the Country Showdown, she formed a duo with her brother, Zack. In 2003 she and her brother were hailed the Festival Idols at the Grand Rapids Arts Festival. In that same year, at only 16 years old, she and her brother hosted their own hour long Sunday morning show Ashley, Zack, and Friends on 106.3 WSCG Greenville, MI.

At 15, Ashley started writing and now has a large repertoire of original songs. She plays acoustic guitar, piano, keyboard, and has recently picked up the mandolin and fiddle/violin.

Ashley was to be chosen from over 22,000 people as one of the top 43 contestants for the regional finals of USA Network's Nashville Star two years in a row.

"I hope to one day make a career out of playing the music that I love. The ineffable satisfaction that comes from touching people through my music is so personal and something I could never replace with anything else."

Ashley is currently in the studio recording her first professional release due out in 2009. Her music is a fun mixture that blends genres like acoustic, country, folk, rock, and blues. Her voice has been described as clean sounding with grit—and her lyrics are driven by her passion for understanding the human experience.
