"SONGLINK CD SUMMER 2009 - "GOLD SONGS""

AT A TIME WHEN NEW MUSIC is saturating the Internet, here's the latest SongLink CD in a slightly revised format, which simply offers what it says on the tin: potential gold songs from songwriters and music publishers who subscribe to SongLink International tipheet. This new collection features tracks from writers in the UK, Ireland, Norway, USA, Canada and from Indian-born Shayan, whose epic ballad Armour Of Love is extraordinary for an unsigned writer.

There's also something of a Liverpool theme running through the CD, as not only have I taken the opportunity of including my own Beatles tribute, Remember (Gold Songs), but also some great new tracks by the latest crop of graduates of LIPA, the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts of which I was honoured to be made a Companion a few years ago. Every year I present the SongLink Prizes at Graduation Day which is attended by Lead Patron Sir Paul McCartney and other dignitaries, with the winning writers chosen from a bunch of great songs submitted by third-year students.

This year, LIPA's always-high standard of songwriting and musicianship is unusually strong, so I'm pleased to include tracks by newcomers like Fables, Ashley Theberge, Untouched and Emma Winterbourne to help them on their way in the business. Hopefully they'll be following in the footsteps of other LIPA successes like Sandie Thom, the Wombats, the Zutons and Jon Allen (featured on a previous SLCD) to name but a few. The Liverpool theme also continues with three cuts from regular SongLink CD track supplier, Ken Maclean of Dedleg Music, based at Liverpool's top studio Parr Street. New artists Adele-Marie, Francis & Master and The Support offer three great songs in very different styles, while Ken has also recently produced Dedleg's own compilation CD After The Party... featuring 21 songs by eight artists who performed in Liverpool during its year as European Capital Of Culture 2008.

Other stand-outs include two great co-writes by Tim Fraser and Phil Manikiza, who have serious credits with such names as Tina Turner, Lulu, Aswad, Julian Lennon and others. Also check out Dave Charles's delightfully witty take on the sexy French sung by 15-year old Absie, along with other choice selections from our subscribers. Songs are the lifeblood of the industry, and the art and business of great songwriting still flourishes. So please take the time to listen to one of our strongest CDs to date, with at least a few of these tracks hopefully set to become future hits. Enjoy!

"Composition concert closes month of music"

Grant MacEwan’s multi-talented song-
writing students brought a dazzling end
to the MacEwan Month of Music with
a year-end concert at the John L. Haar
Theatre on Mar. 31.
In the Saturday show, instructor Alix
Bean-Sedmak announced the “world
debut of original songs” by the sixteen
students in her Songwriting II class,
each student featuring two songs that
they had composed and written this
past semester.
From the start of the concert, the
audience was blown away by the
mature sound, versatility and multitude
of talents displayed by the students.
Many students played more than one
instrument, switching from piano to gui-
tar to bass between sets. Several also
provided back-up vocals or sang on
behalf of their fellow classmates.
Not one performance was alike as the
students were encouraged to experi-
ment with different music styles includ-
ing pop, rock and roll, metal, coun-
try and even Latin and Asian-inspired
sounds. Different ensembles of instru-
ments were formed for each perfor-
mance, providing a variety of sounds
that ranged from big-band to the blue-
grass-inspired one-microphone style.
Newly-elected VP Ops and Finance
Curtis Smith opted to play his first song,
the lonely Desert Wind, solo without
any other instrumentation, while Joanna
Gottlob enlisted a brass band of trom-
bone, trumpet and saxophone for her
Latin-inspired tune.
While the guitar riffs, piano trills,
saxophone solos and overall instru-
mentation was jaw-droppingly impres-
sive, the imaginative song lyrics pro-
vided an insight into the immense tal-
ent, creativity and eloquence of each
student.
Drawing inspiration from Bible vers-
es, line dancing and two stepping, the
weather, people in the news, and a love
for Mexico, the students crafted songs
that evoked sadness, elation, excite-
ment and romantic memories.
Kirby Green opened the show with
two folk and country songs that had
the audience tapping their feet. Her
second song, Breakdown, was particu-
larly energetic and upbeat, melding the
country sounds of a fiddle to the mod-
ern guitar riffs of an electric guitar.
Ashley Theberge’s Feist-like singing
style and light-hearted Bicycles had a
jazzy, mellow vibe and was reminiscent
of happy days, while Ryan Chipeniuk’s
Fictional God provided a dark, edgier
metal sound to the mix.
Cecilia Oteiza delivered a strong,
dance-pop piece So Alive, and encour-
aged the audience to clap along to the
rhythm and shake their hips in their
seats.
Lauren Busheikin experimented with
percussion sounds and had her drum-
mer thump a hollow, wooden box with
his hands to provide a solid beat in
Victor’s Song.
The Songwriters’ Concert was dedi-
cated to the memory of Rick Garn, a for-
mer instructor and program chair who
passed away on Mar. 16, 2004. Garn
was responsible for starting the song-
writing program at Grant MacEwan
College.

Bio

Ashley Theberge; a Canadian singer/songwriter.
She travelled to Liverpool, UK in the fall of 2008 to study music at Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA).
Since then, she and her band have performed all over Liverpool and at the Bedford in London to amazed crowds.
Her quirky, folksy pop music is influenced by her jazz and classical background, honed for years in her hometown of Edmonton, Alberta.
With her warm and witty banter on stage, she welcomes the audience in and makes them feel right at home amongst her eclectic collection of tunes.
Backed by bass, accordion, drums and guitar, songs like ‘Ba Doo Day’ and ‘Iron and Wine’ display thought provoking lyrics and delightful melodies reminiscent of Fiona Apple, Joni Mitchell and Regina Spector.

Ashley was selected to perform in the Bedford Showcase in London in the fall of 2008. She also performed in both the Liverpool Sound City Festival and The 3rd Degree Festival in the Paul McCartney Auditorium in May 2009.

She has attended both Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA), in the UK. She has earned an Honors Degree in Performing Arts, with a double major of song writing and performance.

Ashley has been busy this year writing, creating and co-producing her debut C.D. entitled “Ba Do Day”.
A lot of people ask what exactly ‘Ba Doo Day’ means. Well, it’s actually a nonsense word that Ashley invented while writing the title track off the Ba Doo Day album. It describes that amazing feeling that can’t quite be put into words when you’ve come through a hard time - a word to describe the feeling of the first glimpse of sunshine after months and months of rain. It is a word for the euphoria, happiness and growth that comes from overcoming difficult situations in life.

The album will be released in Canada this summer, and in the UK in the fall. Ba Doo Day is the perfect word to describe Ashley’s excitement at the release of this work.

The title track from the album “Ba Do Day” is currently available on iTunes. This track was also selected to be on “The Best of the 3rd Degree” iTunes release.

“Tie Up Your Shoes” was chosen for the latest “Song Link” album in the UK. She finished her academic career at LIPA with a private songwriting lesson with the illustrious Sir Paul McCartney, which was an amazing and life-changing moment for her.

Ashley will be performing throughout the UK this coming fall, to follow up the release of her debut album, “Ba Do Day”. Performance dates and venues will be available on Ashley’s website (www.ashleytheberge.com), which will open early September 2009.
