"Poems reference his life, frustrations, discrimination"

Slam poetry is a popular trend among poets. It enables the artist to deliver his or her poetry in a drastic and forceful way.

On Oct. 16, a slam poet named Asia performed at the AC College Union Building.

The CUB was adorned in candles burning on the tables, and Roaster's coffee and pastries were available. It was a free show that started around 7 p.m. Many AC students and their friends attended.

Asia is a poet from Miami, Fla., and travels to various places, including colleges, to perform.

He also performed on HBO's "Death Poetry Jam," where he received a standing ovation.

Asia showed up wearing a black jacket, black tie, pinstriped pants, Chuck Taylor sneakers and a hat on his head.

His first poem, titled "Breathe," was a vent of his frustrations as he talked about things that make him irate.

The crowd cheered for him and seemed impressed. He then followed with a poem, which he said was his "first piece ever written." It talked about discrimination against Asian people and how it affects his everyday life.

In his next piece, he spoke of his childhood, his mother and the hardships he caused his family. He referred to his past addictions and the strain of being the eldest child.

Then he went into a poem inspired by the movie, Crash, again speaking of discrimination against minorities.

Other poems he recited spoke of his sex life, accepting yourself for who you are and being content with your appearance.

He also talked about losing a friend to breast cancer, how he discovered he had cancer himself and the struggle to fight the disease.

During intermission, a local group of slam poets called "Slamarillo" performed; they were followed by Asia's ending.

Audience members responded well to Asia as they clapped and cheered.

"I loved how enthusiastic he was and how his poems were real and about real life," said Katelyn Crutchfield, a biology major.

"I enjoyed his honesty, his love for what he does and the fact that he wants us to be who we are," said Dawnn Gardner, a human development major.

"I enjoyed his performance thoroughly," said Katelin Satterwhite, a business major.

"He was passionate, and he seemed to really move the audience."

Bio

As an aspiring novelist / brain surgeon / ninja, Asia never thought spoken word poetry would be his calling. But as with everything else we encounter in life while dealing with the elusive astrological joke we’ve come to know as destiny, here Asia stands.
In the early months of 2006, Asia faced a battle with cancer. Asia spent the next few months contemplating retirement from poetry- convinced that his voice wasn’t unique enough to stand out. He didn’t know it then…but it would be cancer that would save his life.
In the months that followed the blessings came pouring. A feature on Russell Simmons’ HBO Def Poetry; 2006 Performer of the Year by APCA; 1st Place at the 2008 Southern Fried Poetry Championships.
Okay, so maybe he never became the ninja he wanted to be. But come to his show and he’ll guarantee you will have never seen him coming.
