"At The Shore's "Band of The Week"-Silent Sleep"

The last thing Silent Sleep will do is make you tired - that's the band's promise to those who attend their live shows. The band, which used to perform under the name Fire With Fire, is back in action with an improved sound its members say you won't find anywhere else.

"We don't sound like anyone but Silent Sleep. We really are a mixed bag of sounds," says bassist Matt Podolski. "We like to say it sounds like surfing in shark-infested waters - enjoy the ride, but watch out!"

For fans who remember Fire With Fire, the rock 'n' roll group hit the local music scene with a force, especially after its debut album, "Broken Hearts and Bruised Egos," was released on iTunes in 2008. Though the band's members needed some time off in early 2009, Podolski says there was never a doubt it would return by 2010 - and it has.

"Silent Sleep was formed with Dave stepping up from lead guitarist to lead vocalist," he says. "I have been a musician ever since I picked up the trumpet in fourth grade, and when I met my fellow bandmates, we all had an instant connection through music. It was like we could read each other's minds. We knew that this group would do great things."

The band's most recent "great thing" is the final recording of its latest tracks, soon to be pitched to record labels around the country.

"This April, we recorded at a state-of-the-art studio in Cleveland, which is owned and operated by Standby Records' CEO Neil Sheehan," Podolski says. "The label is currently mixing and mastering the tracks (that we recorded), and then they will be shipping it to 17 record labels, like Victory and Relapse, for a possible record deal."

So as the excitement of stardom stirs with Silent Sleep, be sure to catch them on the small stage while you still can. See all the band has to offer this Saturday, July 17, as it performs during the "Babes Burnin' Rubber" festival, a special event geared to benefit breast cancer research, happening at the New Jersey Motor Sports Park, 8000 Dividing Creek Road, Millville.

The show, which is sponsored by Conquer Entertainment, features Silent Sleep as the headlining act. "There will be celebrity appearances, vendors, rally car races, and our show, which will also feature other live acts," Podolski says. The fun starts at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $15. For more information about this show, go to Silent Sleep's MySpace and Twitter pages, or call the New Jersey Motor Sports Park at 856-327-8000.

Roster: Dave Butler, lead vocals, rhythm guitar; Rudy Budnick, lead guitar; Matt Podolski, bass; Anthony Calderin, drums.

What To Expect: "People can expect to be entertained, plain and simple," Podolski says. "We love to do unexpected things, and also get people involved with the show."

Originals: "We don't play cover songs - all original songs right now," Podolski says. "We actually just added two awesome songs to our playlist called 'Floating' and 'DRRD.'"

Musical Influences: 30 Seconds To Mars, Deftones, Circa Survive, Tool and Miles Davis.

Local Roots: "Although we have played in venues across the country, southern New Jersey is our home," Podolski says. "This is where we have built a respectable following from the ground up."
