Bio

Born and raised in the city of Chicago, Poet’s childhood was filled with music. Poet’s environment was harsh, so to keep him on course amid his turbulent surroundings, his parents provided him with constant musical inspiration that included the sounds of Otis Redding, The O’Jays, and Earth, Wind and Fire. As an 80’s baby, he was definitely motivated by the culture of Hip-Hop. Rap artists of the early 90’s such as Nas, EPMD, DJ Quik, Tupac, and the Notorious B.I.G influenced his love of lyrics. Although he had developed a natural talent as a wordsmith during his teenage years, he remained focused on school and athletics. While in college, he realized that his ability to put words together was garnering attention from his peers. He decided to put some of his lyrics to beats, and that became the turning point from him being a novice to a skilled MC. He became recognized by the name “Poet” by his peers, and developed the ability to transform smooth poetry into meaningful rap lyrics. Ultimately, Poet decided that college was not where his heart was and returned home to Chicago, to nurture his budding career
