"Assassinate The Following - "Massacre Of The North""

Canadian’s identity as a people of politeness conjures up images of poppy Canadian music like Sum 41, Avril Lavigne or Stereos. Little does the world know there is a very brutal side to Canadian music. Assassinate The Following shows this other, darker face on their new album Massacre Of The North which, as the name indicates, massacres audiences in the north.... - Chee Kam -

"CD Breakdown"

The cover art for this Windsor metal band's debut full-length CD shows polar bears feasting on bloody human remains scattered over a snow-covered landscape. This fact alone would be enough to make me declare this album the most awesome thing ever, but the music happens to be pretty interesting too. In simplest terms, it's frenzied all-over-the-place progressive death/tech-core along the lines of Between The Buried And Me. There are countless crazy parts and abrupt transitions. Sheer brutality cozies up alongside melodic singing, and they run hand-in-hand into the circle pit. Detectable influences include death metal, prog rock, moshcore, pop-punk, old school thrash, gore-grind, the kitchen sink, etc. The first track is an acoustic waltz with what sounds like an accordian. At the 2:36 mark on track 8 (titled Death Row), there's a guitar part that made me say aloud "What the hell?" Track 10 is an eight-minute instrumental that reminds of a Dream Theater sound check. But the weirdest thing about the whole album is that no matter how complex and off-the-wall the song construction gets, ATF's sound remains cohesive and accessible. This isn't a chaotic mess. It actually sounds good. Discerning metal fans: you don't have to be a technical freak to appreciate this technical freakiness.
