Bio

Beginning as a three piece electro-instrumental act in 2002, Astronaut has evolved over the past 6 years into one of Perth’s premier disco rock acts, incorporating live instruments and astonishing vocals.

Astronaut’s energetic live shows and hook-laden songs resulted in the band winning the “Best Live Electronic Act” WAMI (WA Music Industry) Award in 2006.

Their debut single “Invisible Man” was released in 2006 and the band supported national touring acts such as sonicanimation, Endorphin, The Panda Band, The Avenues, The Dirty Secrets and many more.

In 2009, Astronaut consists of founding member Rhys Watson ( B Movie Heroes) and former Spencer Tracy frontman Lee Jones (currently playing with The Sleepy Jackson and Eskimo Joe) on vocals, guitar and keys. With their flair for pop song writing and rock star moves, Jones and Watson have forged a powerful combination spitting out electro, dirty disco and rock songs reminiscent of bands like Electric Six and The Killers.

Astronaut’s debut album is due out in March 2009, with Jones and Watson enlisting the help of fellow WA musicians Malcolm Clark (The Sleepy Jackson), Shaun Sibbes (Sneaky Sound System), Jarrah McLeary (The Dirty Sectrest) and Nicholas Jonsson (End of Fashion) to bring their vivid, choral dreams to life on record and live.

XPRESS MAGAZINE REVIEW:"....still ball-tearingly rockin'. It seems very much like their sound has changed a lot over the last six months, shifting from a more experimental electronic angle to one more guitar-driven. Given this, frontman Lee Jones has more room to shine in his chosen role. A natural performer, Jones was born for the stage. No spending the entire gig looking at his fretboard; no struggling to play, sing, and dance in unison; no signs of discomfort or being out of place; he is exactly what a performer should be... totally in charge of what he's doing.

....between Jones and Rhys 'Cowboy' Watson, the band has an amazing live dynamic. Musically there is nothing but fun on the table...

... their overall sound is extremely textured and interesting. Good band this one... and definitely capable of pushing themselves further and further. "- Mike Wafer
