As We Climb

July 24th 2009

It’s a dreary and grey Friday night in London town and we are in search of some entertainment to brighten up our evening, so we head down the The Fly on New Oxford Street to check out new and upcoming punk-pop-rockers As We Climb.

We are very excited to have found this band playing their first London show. Based in Cambridge, they have racked up quite a following, but this is their first time playing live in central London and it will certainly not be their last. Currently in the studio laying down tracks for their debut mini album, As We Climb are set for big things and, by the sounds of tonight, they are already on their way.

They take to the stage with first track ‘Light It Up’ which grasps the attention of the crowd and draws people down the stairs towards the stage. This track does exactly what it says on the tin, it brings energy and atmosphere to this dark and minimal venue: “Somebody strike a match/Let’s put a spark into this room”.

What we like about this band is the unity that they show on stage and the four way harmonies that give them the edge over other pop punk bands on the scene at the moment. They demonstrate that each of them is equally as important in achieving their well defined and recognisable sound. Notably, for a band so early in their career, it is good to find that they have clearly taken the time to get their sound right and developed it to a level where it has already become their trademark sound and shows their personality; every song fits perfectly into their set.

‘Winners Can’t Be Choosers’ is instantaneously magnetic. With vocals that promise success this track ensures that nobody in the room remains still. An indication of what they are capable of, this has hit written all over it. Catchy riffs and block-rocking beats keep us transfixed from start to finish. Vibes of New Found Glory and A are rife, but this band don’t replicate, they create their own sound.

‘Everyone’s Doing It Now’ is a track that is destined for big things at live shows. With shout-out-loud lyrics, we can already see crowds screaming the lyrics back loud and proud at venues that are sure to be packed out. “Get up, get out and go where you want to/Break in, break out I’ll leave if I have to/Get up, get out and do what you want to/Don’t make a scene baby everyone’s doing it now”. The mid-song riffs build and combust into an explosive chorus that creates an atmosphere to engulf the venue here tonight. The combination of passion and ability is evident; no one is doing more than they are right now.

The mega catchy riffs of ‘Don’t Fight It’ demonstrate further that As We Climb are a force not to be reckoned with. “Run out the rails and tell them I’m leaving/Strike up the band and play what I’m feeling”. Sooner than we realise they are drawing their strong and succinct set to a close.

Set closer ‘Tell it To My Tombstone’ is the deal sealer of the evening. Tonight they have certainly saved the best until last and we would be shocked if this was not a future single release. This is their anthem, a song that combines great verses with monster rocking choruses that will reverberate around your head for days and proves that As We Climb have the ability to compete with the best of the rest.

With a shout out loud “We’ll raise the dead tonight” - if that was physically possible then this band would surely achieve it tonight. What is certain is that this band has awesome potential and given the opportunity As We Climb will scale the heights of success and possibly beyond. - musosguide.com

Bio

They’ve only been together for a little over 6 months, but that hasn’t stopped As We Climb from perfecting their own unique dose of 'Heavy Pop' - a sublime blend of chugging guitars and harmony-infused melodies.

“We all grew up listening to rock and punk, but I think secretly we always had this pop sensibility inside as well. With this band, it’s a chance to join those two elements and get the best results out of both.”

A killer cocktail to help you 'Rock and roll all day and stay out all night', as the band states on their track 'Winners Can’t be choosers'.

Along with 4 other offerings of pop-rock precision, these tracks are part of their Debut EP 'Let it show'. Recorded with producer Matt O’Grady (You me at Six, Deaf Havana), this release gives the first real taste of what this exciting new band have to offer. With invitations to play exclusive Red Bull events and tour offerings in the bag this band have only just started their musical careers but they have achieved so much in so little time. There is definitely a future here.
