As We Speak: Lost in the Station

With the advent of “heavier than thou” nu-metal and the seventies “garage-rock” revival, it seems that few bands are keeping music technical yet forthright. In a period when image and stage presence tend to rule the airways, San Diego band As We Speak settles for a more softened sound—and holds this through their first full-length album Lost in the Station. Self-described as “Poetic Indie rock with an eclectic rhythm section,” the band’s quality shines through like a beacon to the jaded masses. The album is certainly catchy: reminiscent of Neil Young’s guitar attack, the reverb-laden riffs of the Velvet Underground and the psychedelic inter-weavings that would make any classic rock buff smile. As We Speak, comprised of members Daniel Kirkpatrick (vocals/guitar), Jeff Smith (guitar), Jordan Cassidy (bass/vocals), and Jonny Hardcastle (drums), has existed for a little more than a year and half and secured many live dates in the San Diego area. I found this album relaxing yet insightful—and it certainly proves a good “driving” album for those of you hitting the road any time soon. The subdued cadence of the drums and the thick bass lines stand like a thick hand poised for massage—ushering the listener into a mellowed room.


ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS:
Track 2, entitled “Moonlit Mile” has a great riff in the beginning, and the vocals are innocent and not overbearing. Full harmonies flank the line, “I don’t know why” and aid in the somber mood of the song. Track 7, called “Last Waltz” reminds me of some sixties British invasion B-side…I just keep coming back to this song. The chords are simple and straight-forward, and the liberal use of reverb brings the song back to the musical influences of this band (Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Led Zepplin). I also dig the tenth track, deemed “Temptress”…probably because I am a sucker for minor chords and walk-downs. I think this song is the same chords to a Devo song, yet the stripped-down plucking and sizzling drums causes the listener to quiet down and ponder the heart-broken lyrics.

Overall, As We Speak: Lost in the Station is a GREAT album—pick it up from their website www.aswespeak.net and chill for awhile. Keep on truckin’…
