PARAMARIBO - “Sranan wini! We zijn nu niet alleen vertegenwoordigers van Suriname, maar nu van het hele Caribisch Gebied.” Andre Jantz, bassist van de Surinaamse metalband Asylum, kan zijn geluk niet op. Asylum is in de vroege zondagochtend gekozen tot winnaar van de finale van de Wacken Battle Caribbean in Trinidad en Tobago.
Asylum bestaat uit Romeo Nanhekhan (zanger), Jose Terhoeven (drummer), Chesron Yard (gitarist) en Andre Jantz (bassist). In een uitverkochte show wisten zij het publiek en de jury voor zich te winnen met de nummers 'Enslaved', 'Ascension', 'Dis' na mi kondre' en 'Feti'. Als winnaar mag de groep van 2 tot 4 augustus het Caribisch gebied vertegenwoordigen bij het internationaal Wacken Open Air in Duitsland, het grootste metalfestival van Europa.
Al vóór vertrek naar Port of Spain gaf bandlid Jantz aan dat ze "alles op alles zullen zetten om tot winnaar gekozen te worden". De afgelopen twee jaren heeft de band hard gewerkt om hun muziek regionaal bekendheid te geven en dat kwam ook tot uiting bij hun show in Trinidad. In de finale moest de Surinaamse metalband het opnemen tegen de Guyanese 'Feed the Flames' en drie metalbands uit het gastland 'Goodnight Parliament', 'Hail the Hatter' en 'The Supernormal'. - De Ware Tijd

Metal music is still very misunderstood in the South American country of Suriname. But due to the country's rich amalgamation of cultures, it can still be found thriving in it's gritty musical underground. The scene is gaining popularity and when discussing heavy metal in Suriname, one cannot go without mentioning ASYLUM. The word "asylum" is associated with both protecting someone who is fleeing from danger, and an institution designed to care for the mentally ill. And so in a twist of irony, die-hard fans across Suriname find acceptance and unity in the aggressive riffs, and groovy basslines ASYLUM delivers and have made the band their own personal safe-haven. The band's songs touch on a variety of topics. From uncensoring the nation's frustration with rampant political corruption in "Dis Na Mi Kondre", the first of their songs partially written in the native language of Sranan Tongo, to songs like "Ascension" that deal with triumph over personal demons and becoming a better person, ASYLUM infuses elements of groove, thrash, and death metal with their own Surinamese flair to bring to the listener a sonic assault that leaves you with a pain in your neck and hunger for more. The 4-man brutal brotherhood, lead by vocalist Romeo Nanhekhan have since their humble beginnings in 2012 dominated the Surinamese metal scene and have started to share their brand of "Sranang metal" to the broader metal world, starting with their DOMINATION tour that started in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and climaxed at the Wacken Open Air festival in Wacken, Germany.
