"20 Great New Bands From NE England"

1) Athletes in Paris

"Athletes in Paris also produce perfect pop anthems with songs catchier than a Frisbee"

"This band will be headlining festivals in years to come playing their familiar stompers to the delight of the crowd. They serve up a feast of guitar at its finest and this is why they are top of the list, catch them in the live arena and it’s easy to see why."

- Louder Than War

"REVIEW: ATHLETES IN PARIS – BORROWED TIME"

"After earlier this week meeting up with the new troubadours of North East music, Athletes In Paris, it’s clear these guys are determined not to slip up anywhere alone their way to stardom. From their electric live performances, to their rock and roll swagger, Athletes In Paris are here to stay, whether you like it or not."

"A three minute stomper written about the turbulence experienced towards the final stages of a relationship, it’s already a live favourite and it’s not difficult to hear why."

"It’s danceable, energetic and all too human, three very important aspects of modern day indie music" - Crack In The Road

"Athletes In Paris"

Athletes In Paris are one of the standout unsigned acts in the region, with an ambient indie sound that is more infectious than the winter flu. In a good way obviously. The 5 piece from Newcastle base their sound firmly around a funky beat that is similar to that of Friendly Fires and songwriting admittedly influenced by the likes of Jack Penate. The lads are basking in the resurgence of the North East scene and have played most venues open to unsigned acts. The band were particular impressive at this years SPLIT Festival in Sunderland, where they held there own alongside more established acts such as Frankie & The Heartstrings, Detroit Social Club and The Futureheads. Their invite onto the bill was actually down to impressing the organisers first hand at a previous gig, organinsers including Bary 'Futurehead' Hyde.

It won't be long before Atheletes In Paris start putting on their own shows around the North East and with a new single due out after some work in the capital on a new EP, the freshness and originality of their sound will soon be reaching a wider audience. A chance to see the band prior to their launch pad that is 2011 will come at this gig and its an opportunity that shouldn't be missed. - Emma Howe - Floatationsuite.com

"Listen: Athletes In Paris - "Borrowed Time""

England certainly has some talented musicians and almost every band I get sent from over seas, has some catchy tunes. Athletes In Paris comes from Newcastle and have been known to crash some parties at the local universities to play some of their tunes. This would only generate some buzz for the band and get people talking.

Athletes In Paris has some groovy-pop anthems that will have any casual listener singing along. Their song "Borrowed Time" is a bouncy pop tune, with plenty of hand claps that will get you into the rhythm. This is the first song I have heard by the group and if they continue to make songs of this caliber, they will be sure to gain more attention in the upcoming years. Listen to "Borrowed Time".

"Athletes in Paris – Borrowed Time"

Catchy melodies and expertly executed harmonies combines with funky hair and retro hi-tops to create a truly stunning live performance. This is currently their only recorded song and as well as making great use of the auxiliary percussion player, singer Matt’s voice is perfectly suited to this chilled indie tune.” - Tim Barrow - TheBubble.org.uk

"Athletes in Paris are a superbly original band. . ."

“Athletes in Paris are a superbly original band, they took me completely by surprise when I first saw them. They have developed a sound that is at odds with the surroundings of Sunderland, a breath of fresh air in the blustery north. I love the way they arrange the percussive element of the band, it give the band a lightness of touch, a certain effortless strut that I find to be mesmerising. The use of jazz harmony is another ear catching element to a band that I think has MASSIVE potential!” - Barry Hyde - The Futureheads

Bio

Athletes In Paris come from the Northeast and sing in an accent too broad for anyone outside a 50 mile radius of Newcastle to fully comprehend more than little soundbites. To the accidental tourist they are an indie band speaking in tongues. They have two drummers playing world beats and latin grooves. Their incredibly catchy and equally idiosyncratic pop songs are punctuated with chanted gang-vocals and frantic muted guitar picking. It's one big multicultural northern melting pot and it may give you that long awaited EUREKA! moment that makes you realise the missing link between Earth, Wind and Fire, Friendly Fires, Jack Penate and Prefab Sprout.

2011 saw the band release their debut single 'Borrowed Time' (The Animal Farm UK, Cosine USA) and follow up single 'Heartbeat' (The Animal Farm UK) along with other viral releases all gaining airplay on BBC 6 Music, XFM and Amazing Radio. Live highlights included performances at Evolution Emerging Festival, Split Transmission Festival, Alternative Escape Festival alongside a BBC 6 Live session for Tom Robinson.

Before 2012 sees the boisterous purveyors or Indie-Pop hit the road again with a nationwide headline tour in support of their debut album, Athletes In Paris play: Kensington Roof Gardens 10/02, Bridge Hotel, Newcastle 15/02 and The Great Escape, Brighton 12/05, Kush Kamp, Essex, 13th-16/07.
