"At the Table with Dr. King"

On January 24, through the generosity of the Parents' Association, the middle school students were treated to a powerful performance: At the Table with Dr. King. This was a dynamic multi-media experience featuring the award-winning band Dave LeMieux and House of Soul, the national champion slam poet Ay- inde Russell and exclusive video footage. The presentation focused on the ?kitchen table moment? in Dr. King’s life—after numerous death threats, he was about to give up but prayed for strength and then found the courage to move forward. At the Table with Dr. King, with its music from the times, pic- tures, and recordings of Dr. Martin Luther King’s speeches, was a history les- son which inspired students to look around and do the right thing. - Pinecrest School

"Students experience At the Table with Dr. King"

ESD and Greenhill students experienced a very inspiring message about finding their life’s calling and answering that call after watching a presentation titled “At the Table with Dr. King.”

In honor of Black History Month, the program explored the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement though integrating live music, period-based audio and video clips, monologues, and historical narratives.

People Newspaper editor Dan Koller and I watched the presentation with a group of ESD students and after it was over, we left pretty excited to change the world.

At a round table after their performance, cast members told us that the program was meant to inspire students to be agents of positive change in their community. Some of the Upper School students at ESD and Greenhill were interviewed by cast members and all had positive reactions to the message.

A couple of student leaders from ESD said they are planning a many other events for Black History Month including charity projects and talent shows.

In collaboration with DADYO, a student diversity organization including ESD, Jesuit, Ursuline, St. Mark’s, Hockaday, Parish Episcopal, and Greenhill, the schools and students have a busy month ahead of them recognizing Black History Month.

"Students Attend At the Table with Dr. King Program 2012"

On Tuesday, April 10, Woodward students from the Upper, Middle and Lower Schools attended the At the Table with Dr. King program--a special interactive assembly in honor of the Week of Understanding.

The assembly examined the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the calling he heard during the American Civil Rights Movement to respond to the needs of the oppressed in the great interest of peace. Through music, poems, quotes, photos and videos, the students were charged to ask themselves, 'What impact will my life have on others?' and to discover the responsibility they have to their communities.

Performances for the Primary School and Woodward North will take place on Wednesday, April 11.

At the Table with Dr. King is performed by Dave LeMieux and the House of Soul from Colorado.
