Bio
Hailing from Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn, five New York natives
make up the band AUTOMA, which, depending on how it is pronounced,
could mean ROBOT in Italian, or AUDITORY TUMOR in Latin.
The sound is built from a love of different genres, ranging from
Schoenberg to Sonic Youth, from This Heat to The Mars Volta. There are
two guitar players that channel math rock and post punk, a drummer
influenced by metal, and a bassist that grew up on funk, accompanied
by blues-style female vocals. The lyrics are emotionally honest,
tackling topics like heartbreak and the painful isolation of city
life.
The fusion of these styles allow the songs to vary from rock to
post-punk to experimental, while still maintaining a melodic
sensibility. Throughout their existence, the band has continued to
garner a lot of support for its deliberately non-indie approach to the
sonic walls of sound.
