"12.15.09"

first and foremost… tom skerrit. moving forward! december fifteenth marked a monumental occasion for the guys of average age statue — frontman colby swift, lead guitarist chase stidham, bassist cpt. steven krause, and drummer ethan lawson — with their live nashville debut. the end, a 150-capacity bar/venue on elliston place, hosted average age statue’s next step in their push forward, a band having played their way through high school auditoriums to the depths of loudhouse coffee & stage one twelve (each in the outer nashville area). as expected, the band brought along a massive following of fans; those in attendance included manager benton oglesby, merch guy korey fencl, family members curtis stone, adam krause, and olivia lawson, alongside eleana castaneda, chase smith, dillon gonzales, christina hutson, jonathan ramey, alex mcduffee, shyanne seavers, myself, and a collection of others.

the tuesday night showcase kicked off at 10:12pm with london, england’s parramøn. their thirty-four minute, eight-song set was spent reliving eighties hair metal at its worst… no offense. (i’ll feel like a complete heel if anyone from the band reads this, but i’d prefer to be honest. and honestly, i just didn’t dig the music.) a couple of “i’d rather not see that” moments were sprinkled throughout, from lead singer ubaldo esteban’s attire (you, sir, are not robert plant; let’s move past the girl jeans) to, well, lead singer ubaldo esteban’s stage antics (you, sir, are not a woman; let’s not grind on your bandmates). crowd interaction slightly increased the band’s appeal, but ultimately, could not save them. neither could the fact that we were promised a cover of michael jackson’s “beat it” upon meeting the guys before the show, only for them to fail to deliver on their promise. unlike the guys of parramøn, a few dudes who did deliver for the night were nathan schock & company, making their live debut as a collective unit. a complete turnaround from their predecessors, shock & his bandmates played a tight set of seven songs, heavily suggesting influences of classic rock’s finest (notably the eagles). a half-hour of simple, raw rock & roll tunes — schock delivered five originals, including standouts “always searchin’,” “dandelion,” and “passing time,” as well as an excellent cover of ronnie milsap’s “stranger in my house.” needless to say, schock’s set was a beautiful change of pace, and did not go unappreciated. (side note: another upstart band from white house, collision, performed after average age statue — unfortunately, i was unable to stay for their performance. sorry, dudes!)

“she was dancing for no other reason than to move,” brought in by guitarist chase stidham, opened average age statue’s half-hour outing; as a whole, the band proved to be as tight as ever. specifically, lead singer colby swift continues to evolve in his role of frontman, from the near-perfected screams to the crowd-grabbing chants of “i am the weakerman.” the controlled frenzy of “house of sisters” followed, a personal live favorite of mine. fingernail choking & all, “the communion” played third, proceeded by the debut of their latest work: a ten-minute opus, pulling together the band’s upcoming concept album into a single movement. for most bands, a live performance this long would be a drag; with average age statue, however, the diversity & brilliance of a song such as this (which was completed hours before showtime) makes for an intriguing, surprisingly quick ten minutes. my hat is off to swift, stidham, krause, and lawson. without sounding like a forced transition, quite a few things went flying in the closing minutes of the show… literally. “electric zoos,” the band’s established closer, is known for quite a few things — destruction being the most prevalent. a couple of flying shoes, a destroyed bass (… don’t tell mama), and a “bang! i’m alone!” later, the “electric zoos” tradition prevailed, with a performance entirely fitting to leave the average age statue mark on the end.

"9.12.09"

average age statue setlist. a conversation. she was dancing for no other reason than to move. the communion. trick knees and punctured ears. house of sisters. probably not [tentative title]. and i come back home. electric zoos.

notes. took a two-minute interstate drive to cross plains; jeska, shyanne, and whitney accompanied. barely made the turn into the stage one twelve parking lot, marking our first time being at the venue. (had anyone else even heard of stage one twelve until this show? i hadn’t.) come to find out, it’s a nice little venue. it gained a lot of loudhouse coffee comparisons —- mainly for the fact that they’re two of the only known venues to play at, outside of nashville, for a local white house band —- with the general consensus being that it beats out its greenbrier competition. can’t argue, although i’m a fan of both venues. stage one twelve wins in terms of the stage area; a larger room was its main advantage. the lighting wasn’t the most ideal for concert photography (at least for my camera), which explains the lack of quality photographs. i snapped three or four and gave up; just wouldn’t work. aside from that, though, it was a nice all-around atmosphere. i like the place.

the show was scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m.; we arrived at 8:15 p.m. to find benton oglesby (of echoes of grace fame) midway through his three-song set. i caught a coheed & cambria cover, and he closed up with an original, titled “no end in sight” (which you can find by inching over to his myspace). cody pennington played second, featuring a mix of covers & originals. a cover from a day to remember seemed to be the big hit; my personal highlight was a loose cover of john mayer’s “your body is a wonderland.” in all honesty, i wasn’t a fan of his; the set seemed to drag on for a solid hour, and it all sounded very… generic. acoustic alt. rock, which doesn’t impress me too often. after three or four awkward, “this will be my last song,” promises, he finished up his contribution to the evening and made way for average age statue. in regards to their set, i have two words:

GOAT. GIRL. ring a bell, average age statue? thought so. you don’t want to play “goat girl” for me? i don’t want to write a review for you. two can play this game.

really, though… they’ve put together an incredibly tight live show. coming from someone who thought that their first gig at loudhouse coffee was solid. their set featured eight songs, each from their upcoming concept album. their set also featured a fancy lighting arrangement and a wooden banner, hand crafted by bassist steven krause. speaking of basses & steven krause, falling bass straps make for entertaining situations. and only three shows in to his career, he’s already playing trying times off like a pro. guitarist chase stidham has finally let loose; microphones beware. vocalist colby swift (i’m telling you guys, it’s colin meloy, conspiracy theory) is coming more & more into his own. and drummer ethan lawson will soon be replaced by ian broderick & a gun. as a whole, the group (as i mentioned) is incredibly tight, which is a strong feat, as i’d thought they were already fairly put together. and i’ll say this: take four entertaining guys, have them write music, and you’re going to have entertaining music. not in the comedic sense, but in the sense of writing original, intriguing music; music and lyrics both. it’s a pleasure to watch these four grow as a band. (it’s not a pleasure having them outshine me in music theory class at school, but that’s for another day.) - Michael Jackson

Bio

Average Age Statue was formed in late January of 2009. The group (Colby Swift, Chase Stidham, Ethan Lawson and Steven Krause), who were coincidentally already best friends, decided to start making music together. Frontman Colby Swift, who already had his solo project 2 A.M. Wake-Up going solid, decided to branch out into full band territory. He did so by taking one of his songs that he had previously written (Someone Stole My Horse and Tied a Balloon to Its Stable) and made a full band version of it. Afterwards, the band suddenly realized what they had and decided to write originals and eventually a concept album. Drawing from various influences such as The Decemberists and Thrice, they hope to continue doing what they love for years to come.
