Bio
Awalim is a new look for an ancient dance form. Tribal Belly Dance was created for outdoor and big stage venues in the 1960's. It's goal was to take belly dance out of the restaurant and treat it like any other dance form that normally would be featured on art festival stages. Tribal Belly Dance takes folkloric costuming and music and puts them together in decidedly upbeat and dramatic choreography. The new millennial twist on Tribal Belly Dance is that world music and textiles are extremely popular and accessible and we use many genres both modern and old to make this dance exotic and familiar to our audiences. Awalim has performed at Georgia Renaissance Festival, Little 5 Points Halloween Festival, Dogwood Festival, Decatur Arts Festival, Lake Eden Arts Festival (LEAF) Festival, Atlanta Gay Pride Festival, Peachtree Christian Church‘s Palm Sunday Marketplace, Club 1150, Club Europe, Café Istanbul, DragonCon, the Nashville Tattoo Convention, Endenue and regularly sold out shows at Red Light Cafe and Nicola’s. Awalim's Director, Ziah Ali, makes her living teaching 8 classes a week, conducting workshops nationally during weekends and promoting this art form by producing shows that bring in dancers from the entire Southeast. She has taught folk and Tribal belly dance at public and private schools, college events, Girl Scout camps, LEAF Festival and EstroFest: Women’s Arts Festival. Ziah's students have gone on to dance professionally in international tours with the Belly Dance Super Stars. Visit our website to see a video clip www.awalim.com
