Unleashing their screaming lyrics, rocking riffs and intense drumming at venues across the state, A World Away has distinguished itself as one of the foremost up-and-coming rock bands out of Flint. “We’ve been told that we have a really good stage presence and bring lots of energy to each performance, which is something we’ve wanted to do since day one,” guitarist John Whiteside said. “We want our shows to not only be fun for us but for every person in the crowd.”
Comprised of Whiteside, Tyler Matts (vocals), Mike Hale (guitar/vocals), Chad Morgan (bass), Matt Weber (drums/vocals) and Dan Nowaczyk (keys), A World Away captures the edginess of modern bands (think Senses Fail) while the opening of their album’s title track, “Dinosaurs on a Cruise Ship,” hints at the influence of classic rock legend Pete Townshend.
“Creating our own sound has always been one of our goals; we don’t want to sound like everything else that’s out there today,” explained Whiteside. “I think we’ve accomplished that with our first CD. Our next project — a full-length album we plan recording toward the end of the year — is going to define our sound even more.
“We’re also gearing up for a summer tour,” Whiteside announced. “Fortunately, we’re used to a busy schedule and enjoy playing live!” | RDW

Hailing from the Flint area, modern rock band A World Away has set forth to become an icon of not only the Flint music scene, but the national one as well. Five friends who are extremely passionate and dedicated are ready to show the world their talent. Deriving from influences such as Senses Fail, Saosin and Underoath, A World Away brings a high-energy screamo/aleternative rock with choruses you can sing to and break downs you can rock to. Known for their high-energy shows, A World Away has continued to impress fans all across Michigan leaving them wanting more after every show. A World Away has been able to share the stage with some of Michigan’s top local acts and has even national acts such as Victory Records band Four Letter Lie and Rise Records bands Before Their Eyes and For The Fallen Dreams.
A World Away debuted in October of 2005 playing for over 100 people at Clutch Cargos in Pontiac, Michigan. Shortly after debuting, A World Away went on to play countless shows including some of Michigan’s top venues such as the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor, Temple Club in Lansing and The Machine Shop in Flint to name a few. In only a few months of playing shows they began to receive a lot of attention in the Flint Area, getting their name in a few Flint newspapers and also in Real Detroit Weekly. After several months of playing shows and writing new material A World Away decided to enter Sentient Studios in Chicago Illinois to record what would become their first EP Dinosaurs On A Cruise Ship. With the release of their EP, A World Away has gone on to expand their rapidly growing Michigan fan base playing shows all across the state. Barely being able to keep their album in stock, A World Away sold over 100 CD’s in only a month. A World Away’s song Even Closer has even received airplay on local Flint area radio station banana 101.5.
In September of 2007, A World Away released “Dinosaurs on a Cruise Ship” internationally through iTunes. The CD has since gone on to sell hundreds of downloads world wide. In the winter of 2008, A World Away recorded two demos with Matt Dalton at 37 studios. The two demos can currently be found on their MySpace page. A World Away has plans to release the follow up to “dinosaurs” in 2008 and tour in support of the new album.
