""Axel Krygier, Argentine tones""

“An Altiplano twist". It’s the experiment undertaken (and mastered) by Axel Krygier for his latest album, Pesebre (coming soon). In the abounding universe of this Argentinian, musically modified organisms are not uncommon. ( . . . ) Flute solos throughout, keyboard riffs and vocals - it’s a complete artist who fills the dance floor with a strong academic background. ( . . . ) From the endless list of groups whom this passionate artist has integrated, we will note simply La Portuaria, the excellent “Talking Heads Argentins,” with whom he plays the saxophone. ( . . . ) The collage, the derision, the taste of naïve melody, and also the pleasure of dancing, are other constants of his work: four full albums and a host of various collaborations ( . . . ) “Among my recent adventures, I underline the music I ordered of Alfredo Arias for Trois Tangos, which showed on stage in Paris at the Theâtre du Rond-Point last November and December.

""Axel Krygier""

Between a sample of Borges and the bleating sheep on the vocador, his new album, Pesebre, ( . . . ) escapes all classification: a proto-Klezmerist, funky and effective, responds to a delicate instrumental ensemble evocative of Purcell – all this is served by the irreproachable production, the brilliantly philosophical lyrics. ( . . . )” - NOV-DEC 09, WORLD SOUND, FR

""Surrealistic Grooves""

Axel Krygier mashes up the future. It’s always a grim undertaking to describe any style of music in words, but the genre-defying work of producer and multi-instrumentalist Axel Krygier makes the task particularly daunting. Krygier’s unique sound—an avant-garde mash-up of jazz, rock, electronica, cumbia, Argentine folklore and experimental music—makes it easy to succumb to such tempting descriptions as ‘Atahualpa Yupanqui meets Thelonious Monk, performed by Frank Zappa and remixed by Diplo,’ but the brush that this 39-year-old composer paints with is even broader than that. ( . . . )” - 28 OCTOBER 2008, GLOBAL RHYTHM, US

""Latin without tears""

“Tasking Krygier, who switches effortlessly between flute, tenor sax and keyboard throughout his funky set, is Argentinian but his musicians come from Spain, Portugal and Cuba. His music veers between reggae, ska, jazz and flamenco with some yodeling thrown in. Odd, but somehow it works.” - THE OBSERVER, SUNDAY 20 APRIL 2003, UK

“This producer from Buenos Aires is one of the most inventive on the Zizek and digital cumbia scene.” - VIBRATIONS 08, FR

Bio

Multi-instrumentalist, composer and fore-runner in the Argentinian Zizek or digital cumbia scene, Axel Krygier returns to Europe as part of a trio in summer of 2010 for the promotion of his new album, Pesebre.
Axel Krygier was born in Buenos Aires in 1969, where he cut his teeth on the saxophone playing alongside Kevin Johansen with the group Instruccion Civica. Though the sax was his first instrument, Axel attained proficiency on many instruments, including the piano and the flute.
He demonstrated his abilities when, at age 18, he bought his first multi-track recorder and for the first time was able to record his own compositions without depending on anyone else. He recorded the compositions playing each instrument himself.
From the early to mid-90s Axel played with the group La Portuaria, with whom he recorded four albums and played in Seville, Nantes, Bogota, New York, Miami and Santiago de Chile, among other cities. He wrapped up his time with La Portuaria in 1996 and began dedicating himself full-time to the development of his solo career.
That work paid off in 1999 when he released his debut album as a solo artist, entitled Echale Semilla on the Los Aos Luz Discos label. The album made its way to European audiences via HiTop Records. The project was showered with praise - Transmusicales in Rennes; BAM in Barcelona; Bal Concert in la Villette, Paris; La Linea Festival Latino in London, among many others. It was called the "revelation of the year" by several publications and seduced the likes of Gilles Peterson, David Byrne and Coldcut.
Having spent several years in Europe, Axel returned to his native Buenos Aires in 2003, where he formed the Sexteto Irreal with longtime friends Fernando Sanalea, Alejandro Teran and Manuel Schaller. An experimental and improvisational group, they went on to earn much acclaim in the Buenos Aires underground night scene.
Axel has also been composing soundtracks for films and creating backing music for dance companies for many years, but had not released those works in album format until the 2003 release of Secreto y Malib.
His third original release, Zorzal, was recorded for Los Aos Luz in 2006 and was, once again, licensed and distributed throughout Europe by HiTop Records in 2007. Between 2007 and 2009, Axel K. revitalized his solo career with a Sound System set, playing and improvising with samplers, keyboards and winds.
He has played in venues and festivals such as Creamfields Festival in Buenos Aires; Feria Musical Brasil in Recife; Sala Juglar in Madrid; and Sala Apolo in Barcelona. Among other venues, hes also played at SOBs in New York; Mezzanine in San Francisco; Echo Plex in Los Angeles; SXSW Festival in Austin; and Sonotheque in Chicago, where he took part in the first North American Zizek Tour.
In 2009, Los Aos Luz Discos published a new soundtrack to the Parisian musical Trois Tangos, a project conceived by Argentinian artists (Alfredo Aras, Gonzalo DeMara and Axel Krygier as composer). A story told in Spanish, French and Italian and inspired by surrealism of the 30s and psychedelic pop of the 70s, it was presented in Paris at the Thtre du Rond Point from the November 10th, 2009 to January 15th, 2010.
Simultaneously, Axel recorded and published his fourth solo album, Pesebre, in Argentina. Its a collection of groovy cumbias, delightful melodies and further explorations in Black music and Latin folkloric sounds, which stirs you to dance to Peruvian Surf, Klezmer Tropical, Voodoo Cumbias and the Andean Twist
