Bio

Azurdee began her music career at the early age of four when she started singing and composing with an old piano at her fingertips. Raised on a corn farm deep in the hills of Kentucky, this little songbird grew up performing in churches, schools, and local county fairs. Her later school years introduced a whole new world of music with a prestigious spot in the 6 piece Jazz Ensemble at Campbellsville University. She moved on to University of Kentucky to complete her degree in Psychology. Soon after, Azurdee met her husband, South African born, John Smuts, who travelled to Kentucky to study American Saddlebred Horses. Together they started a new life in Texas, where you’ll find some of the nicest people to ever wear a cowboy hat! In 2009, John received a job offer all the way from Pretoria, South Africa, to train horses in his home country! With the spirit of adventure, Azurdee was thrilled to immigrate to this amazing country she had heard so much about!

For the past 3 years, Pretoria has been home to this small town girl, her husband, and 2 children, Ansie and Ethan. Two years ago, Azurdee started gigging with acoustic guitarist, Al Harris, as a guest artist at Square Time Cafe in Pretoria. A year later she was given an acoustic guitar and she couldn’t put it down! In April 2011, Azurdee scored her first paying gig at the Louiziana Diner in Pretoria alongside saxophonist, Marlene Hay. The one month booking continues, with many guest artists joining Azurdee along the way! This gig has ushered in many new opportunities throughout the city and beyond, including a regular Sunday spot in Hatfield Square’s Main Stage and Oxford Pub and many solo gigs at Cafe Barcelona. She has also graced the stage at Centurion’s Liedjieboer, Mokha Rock Lounge at Pretoria Botanical Gardens, Hartbeespoort Dam, and she opened for Shannon Hope at Snowflake to kick off Aardklop 2011. But most exciting was Azurdee’s first experience with the South African music festival when she played Aardklop on the Klipdrift Stage along with Keenan Bowes on lead guitar and drummer, Stuart Jacobs. Record companies were elated with this fresh new arrival on the South African music scene and offers came pouring in! But this road has yet to be paved! Azurdee remains an unsigned artist.

Azurdee has a 3 song demo produced by Ludwig Bouwer of One Big Room Studios in Pretoria and has recently completed an original country single, “Purple Sky,” graced with Heath Fouche on guitar! She has performed with some well known local artists including Jaco Labuschagne, Neil Somers, Sycamore, Anton Botha, Jon Delinger, and Karen Ferriera and has been invited by Mathys Roets for a future collaboration! She is the founder of the Michelangelo Fund, a charity for the local foster care program through Hatfield Children’s Homes. December brought the first of many fundraising concerts at Cafe Barcelona in Pretoria, complete with the charity’s original theme song, “Michelangelo,” written and performed by Azurdee!

She is well on her way to completing her debut
album! Visit Azurdee at ReverbNation for the latest
