"Baby Boy Blue – Mary Goes Round"

Formerly the frontman of The MNKD, Baby Boy Blue (real name Steven Michael) dives into hypnotic indie-tronica, with a playful twist on Mary Goes Round.

If you heard The MNKD’s Elate Me, last year, you’ll know that not only will Baby Boy Blue have a keen sense of pop styling, but that Steven Michael’s delivers a stunning vocal display. Mary Goes Round secures both parts, with sub-wave wubs synchronising perfectly with the videos flashing lights, while Michael’s performs as a disorientated, drug fuelled, modern circus performer (that’s what it looks like), who’s monotone lyricism peaks towards a crashing end where his vocals are at their strongest throughout the entire track. - DOYLEANTONYSMITH

"Baby Boy Blue releases debut single"

Fort Saskatchewan musician Steven Sware's latest venture is his solo project, Baby Boy Blue.

Sware just spent a couple months in Toronto for the Canada's Music Incubator Artist Entrepreneur program.

"It was learning the business side of music," said Sware. "(It's going to help) with contracts, working with live venues and producers and really being knowledgable about the whole music industry."

On October 31, the first Baby Boy Blue single, 'Mary Goes Round', was released.

"I wanted it to be a darker dance track. It's talking about drugs and the vicious cycle they can have. It's more produced than my earlier work; there's no guitars on this track and the drums aren't live, they're trap drums, a variation of hip-hop."

Sware plans on releasing some more singles before he puts out a full album.

His next show will be at the 99ten in Edmonton on November 17. - Ryan Connop

"Local artist begins new solo career"

A local musician's new act is off to a hot start.

Steven Sware has made a name for himself with his band The MNKD, he's recently created a new stage persona called Baby Boy Blue.

"This is darker than The MNKD. The music is more electronic," said Sware. "With the band we had songs that were just guitar, bass and drums. This is a lot more produced. I only use a drum pad and synths, so it's a lot more pop; not bubble gum pop, this has more of a dark feel to it."

On stage and through the music there is a distinct carnival theme that's tied to the character.

"I liked the innocence of the idea. It contrasts with the new direction of the music."

Sware has only played a few shows so far, but just last week (July 7) he opened for platinum Canadian artist Virginia to Vegas.

"It was crazy, there were so many people there. They even came out early to watch my set which was very nice. I got his number and we're possibly going to do some songwriting in the future."

Baby Boy Blue plays in Revelstoke, BC on July 19 and is hoping to book more shows in the area soon.

Bio

Edmonton’s Baby Boy Blue (B.B.B.) is a persona created by Steven Sware as a means to express himself through music. He creates dark-pop that is heavily influenced by trap music from notable artists such as The Weeknd and Travis Scott. B.B.B. takes you on a trip in a world dipped in dreamy melancholy and suggestive self-awareness by pulling production and visual influences from the likes of Lana Del Rey and Melanie Martinez.

“I’m able to be a different character on stage and get into the music without having to be self-conscious,” says B.B.B. “The name, branding, stage makeup, production is all an escape from my current world into something that I’ve created.”

B.B.B will release an EP in 2018, preceded by the lead track, “Mary Goes Round”, on October 31st, 2017. “It’s a cyclical dark pop song that plays off of the innocent visual of children at a merry-go-round to talk about the hard issue of drug use and the dangerous cycle that it can create,” explains B.B.B.  The message is wrapped in a dark dancing pop song creating a self-aware party track as B.B.B. sings, “Oh we feel like we're on top of the world; self medicating to numb the bite, and we can't do this every night.”

B.B.B. opened for Virginia to Vegas at The Needle Vinyl Tavern in Edmonton (July 2017).
