Handmade. Urban. Western. Soul.
Baby Money is the brainchild of Chicago based songwriter Pamela Maurer. What started as a solo project has evolved into a 4-piece band based in the Midwest. Her original songs, ranging from gritty, sparse arrangements, to soulful, roof-shaking foot-stompers, are inspired by 1960s girl-groups, soul, old time revival, gospel, and traditional rhythm ‘n’ blues. Baby Money’s first full-length, In Memory of John Doe, released at the Hideout Inn Chicago on May 30th!

Biography

Baby Money and her backing band, The Down Payments, are Rust Belt musicians that perform original rock n roll with a soulful, vintage twist. Baby Money is primarily based in Chicago, but The Down Payments hail from Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and throughout the Midwest. Heavily influenced by 60s girl-groups, gospel, rhythm n blues and early rock n roll, Baby Money writes heartfelt songs punctuated by tight vocal harmonies, reverb-soaked electric guitar, motown bass lines, punchy drums and bittersweet keys.

With recording, mixing and mastering complete on her first full length record, In Memory of John Doe, she and the whole band are preparing to tour this summer in support of the release. Baby Money and her newly assembled Down Payments are refining the live show, and working to promote the new album after a successful release on May 30th in Chicago. A few mini-tours are scheduled this fall around the Rust Belt and Midwest. Keep those eyes and ears peeled

Pamela Maurer (aka Baby Money) is a songwriter hailing from Durango, Colorado. She grew up playing piano and singing in the choir at her small town church, but it wasn't until her Detroit-born father introduced her to Motown, Stax and the like that she began to fall in love with the sound of the city and the music of the 1960s.

In 2003, she relocated to the Windy City and started singing, stomping, and making a whole lot of noise. She has written songs for various other groups, composed music for theatre, and for several years lent her voice and washboard playing for The Barehand Jug Band, winners of the 2010 National Battle of the Jug Bands. She went on to form one half of the rhythm and revival duo Poor Elvis, and has toured extensively in the midwest.

On returning to Chicago from the last leg of touring, Pamela decided to start her own project, with the name Baby Money. After inviting friends from other roots-inspired bands to join her, she began writing and started to perform. As the sound grew, she traded in her ukelele and washboard for a guitar, and with the help of her musician friends, finally formed her backing band, the Down Payments.

Baby Moneys debut EP and zine, Movers! Shakers! Money Makers! along with a collection of singles, Little Red Vinyl was released in May, 2013. Her first full length album, IN MEMORY OF JOHN DOE is set for release on May 30th, 2014, at the Hideout Inn Chicago.

Lyrics

A Little Short While, from "Lil' Red Vinyl." May, 2013.

Written By: Baby Money (aka Pamela Maurer)

oh i loved a boy when i was young a little younger than i
he always wore his clothes too small he didn't know his size
and he would play with me play with me play with me he'd play with my mind
yes it's gotta be true you're already cruel to be so unkind

i always knew that i would be someone who loved someone for all time
no matter how close or far he'd come back to my side
but my someone's lost he's lost and i'm losing my mind
guess i didn't know a thing as true as nothing
no nothing ain't right

my daddy told me to watch and wait 'cause someday is alright
he told me everything he knew when he said goodnight
but then he left, he left he left he left in plain sight
guess it is true you only have a little short while

chorus
(in the recording this is fd up...use lyrics from first chorus)

winter winter
comes and goes
my safety under snow
summer
brings me i don't know
i just want fast to slow

mother, mother
it tortures me
to think what cannot be
nothin makes me bend a knee
i weep i weep to see

break-ish...

runnin runnin must i beg
my head my heart my legs
my bones will break before the day
i hope i plead i pray.

chorus

Lil' Red Money, from "Lil' Red Vinyl." May, 2013.

Written By: Baby Money (aka Pamela Maurer)

somebody told me
i could be happy
if i just had me a little more little red money
a little money
to keep me warm i
n a little red house a little safe from the storm

somebody warned me the night was coming
when not no nothing to get me to dream
a little honey
and a little red money
might buy me comfort might buy a couple things

i told my mama
i told her, "mama...
i don't want nothin but to travel and sing..."
to which she told me,
"find anybody, go find somebody and get you a little red ring."

a whistlin' woman
a whistlin' woman
and a crowin' hen ain't never come to no go ending
a winter woman whispered to me,
"ain't no good found on earth without a little red money"
ain't no good without a little money

i live in a city that works all night

i live in a city that feels no heat

Whenever You Want me, from "In Memory of Johhn Doe." May, 2014.

Written By: Baby Money (aka Pamela Maurer)

whenever you want me

you may not find me

i’m rolling on

if ever you’re hungry for this one’s comp’ny

i will be gone

when you find yourself in need

please do not say you're missing me

i walk alone (x2)

been lovin’ you baby

all broken hearted

been bought and sold

ain’t getting much younger

you know i hunger

i’m never full

i can’t quit you where you stand

i cannot quite your heavy hand

i’m getting old (x2)

been beggin’ and pleadin’

‘til no one’s listenin’

you’re such a tease

i think you can hear me

from high up above me

i’m on my knees

deaf departed dyin’

you know i’m tired of cryin’ at you

please (x2)

ooh

oh up ev’ry morning

i’m awake at night (ooh ooh)

oh i’m just trying to tell you to try to just get by

just get by…

oh darkness and daytime

the whole world’s watching

the world is glass

you’re quietly telling

the things you’re selling

but nothing lasts

oh i was doing fine

‘til you put money on my mind

the time has passed

the time is past
