Bio

The sound of Backup Johnny has been described as having a hint of "pop sensibilitly" but with a strong rock, grown-up edge to it. Vocally, they have been compared to the likes of Green Day, but musically they stand somewhere else. Backup Johnny brings a refreshing sound to the genre they share, and the energetic blend of indie pop with straight-forward rock is sure to deliver a powerful and emotional punch that will wake the scene up. Thanks to their own hard work, the band is back in the studio working on their upcoming album "Love In A Hot Air Balloon", to be released in 2011.

While together in another band at the time, the idea of Backup Johnny started between Romley and Mallard in January 2007. With the bands name and sound already in mind, they recruited guitarist Tyler Evans and later bassist Nick Romero. With the addition of those two, the sound of the music quickly transferred from simple riffs to powerful, catchy piano-based pop-rock songs. From there, the project quickly grew into a full functional band with big ideas. The freshly formed foursome recorded their first album, Heartaches and Hangovers, in summer 2007. With this album, the band would leave their mark in their hometown and gain fans by the hundreds. The album was widely accepted and helped propel the band to bigger shows and larger audiences. They traveled up and down California on a 2 week mini-tour to promote the album and themselves. Backup Johnny also appeared in the Spring 2008 Issue of Verbicide Magazine, being named one of the Top 4 unsigned bands of their genre.

In 2009, Backup Johnny went back into the studio, this time recording a 5 song demo titled DIVE. Even more than the first, this recording was a great success for the band. The single for the album, Ground Bound, was a huge hit with the crowds and started receiving radio play, both locally and nationally, getting air time on college radio stations throughout the country. The boys went on to film a music video for the song as well, a first for the band. Because of the recordings ease to please any listening ears, the band had successfully set up a DIY month-long tour during the summer of 09, traveling from LA to Nashville, TN and back. In promotion for their tour kick-off show, they were on the cover of Bakotopia Magazine as well as having a 2 page spread of the band.

Now armed with new songs, new goals, and a drive that never seems to die, Backup Johnny is ready more than ever to take off from their Southern California hometown and chase their dreams to bigger audiences. Backup Johnny will continue to play shows and tour in support of their new upcoming album.
