"notorious b.a.g. album review"

"With its debut indie release, notorious b.a.g., Brother Bagman borrows from the same 'unclassifiable' playbook as many of its improv-oriented compatriots. But the tale of the tape tells a different story. This album has a number of overt, and covert influences, with obvious nods going to the Southern-fried style of Widespread Panic and the North Mississippi Allstars. But the disc's most promising cuts, including the blistering bounce of 'Treading Water' and 'So Mad,' feel native to this foursome alone. The group manages to stretch itself without succumbing to an identity crisis on the bluesy shuffle 'You' and the expansive 'I Don't Mind.' It's unusual to find a freshman group with this focus, especially when influences too often keep aspiring artists from spreading their own wings -- but these brothers apparently know their bag, man."

Bio

Kansas City quartet Brother Bagman is determined to brew up an eclectic rock and roll stew for the masses. The group’s sound has developed over the years from a mix of chunky funk, southern-fried rock and soulful vocals. On every stage they perform, the message gets through. Brother Bagman comes to play and they want people to get down.

Originally formed in 2002 with drummer Cole Harvey and guitarist Victor Kerr, Brother Bagman added bass player Cliff Moore in early 2006 and guitarist Landon Leist in late 2006. With the current line up in place, new songs and a revitalized spirit have propelled the band to the next level. The group strives for their own distinct sound with a deep pocket feel, drawing upon a wide range of rhythmic influences including funk, rock, reggae, blues, latin and jazz. With that foundation, the band’s melodic goal is always to compliment and support the rhythmic feel of the tune.

Brother Bagman has been playing regionally throughout the Midwest. After the successful release of their first album, "notorious b.a.g.," in 2003, and “extended play” in 2007, Brother Bagman has returned to the studio to start recording their next project due in spring of 2009.
