"Bailey Cooke Album Release Show"

Before Bailey Cooke started putting out her own recordings, she was making the rounds among clawhammer banjo contests at fiddle competitions — and winning some of them. That’s one way to know she’s serious about playing old-time music. And there are other signs to be found on her new self-released album, Tennessee. (Speaking of which, she’s a local now, but she came here from Charlotte, N.C.) For one thing, she’s able to mix traditional numbers with originals. But she’s also old-timey without being a strict traditionalist. Album-opener “Terrible” sounds a little like Jenny Lewis doing Piedmont blues, and Cooke and her frequent collaborator on guitar, Wes Langlois, sometimes conjure Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. (Really, what new old-timey act of the past 10 years hasn’t been influenced by them?) Cooke, though, has a softer, more contemporary vocal attack. Promising stuff.

"Benefit for the Hungry of fooBar"

the enchanting Bailey Cooke, whose delightfully lo-fi original tracks sound like they could be field recordings recently unearthed by Smithsonian Folkways.

Bio

Bailey Cooke emerged into the Americana scene through the tradition of old time music. She began writing music in the fashion of old songs and then working her writing into modern times. She spent her college years following around old folks to fiddler's conventions and then eventually found her place in Nashville and settled until she was uprooted by the flood. Now in Charlotte, NC Cooke continues to write and perform and most recently released her first full length record "Tennessee." Her newest record includes appearances by David Mayfield of Cadillac Sky, Beau Stapleton of Blue Merle, and other incredibly talented musicians
