This release could be re-titled "Relationships Central." Every selection reflects on past, present and future human connections, couples engaged in good to average to mediocre matters of the heart. Baillie And The Boys (Kathie Baillie, Michael Bonagura and Alan LeBoeuf), a band erstwhile rooted in country music, features folk and pop elements throughout its dozen offerings, an acoustic mix that subtlely blends genres. So don't let the 'C' word scare you away.

Lead vocalist Kathy Baillie features an inviting, expressive and emotive voice--the most powerful element of the band. She can heartily match songs with just about anyone out there nowadays. The element of piano backing on various cuts augments Bonagura on acoustic guitar and LeBoeuf on bass, generating an even stronger effect.

Three songs jump out at the listener: the title cut "The Road That Led Me To You," "Feet Of Clay" and "The Lights Of Home." "The Road That Led Me To You" points out that although we may not always know where we are heading, just the act of continuing on and being open to new opportunities and experiences gives us a greater chance for happiness and satisfaction, albeit with no guarantees.

"Feet Of Clay" takes a marvelous look at those we love and who love us, pointing out it is truly miraculous that partners can see beyond the aggravations, the quirks and the differences, and still willingly and lovingly remain connected with another.

Reflecting on spousal choices, "The Lights Of Home" sweetly confirms a couple's commitment to one another. In the song the wife says, "I know this is not the life you dreamed about, before you chose to share your life with me" and, in turn, the husband says "I know you could have had your choice of men, some who could have brought the world to you." With the chance to honestly speak up, both end up stating without regret:

"Show me the lights of home
and tell me what could ever shine as bright?
only the love that's in your eyes
could make me feel the way I feel tonight
I'll take the times we've known and the lights of home..."

The cuts "Treat Me Like A Stranger," "A Far Cry From Him" and "Even Then" are also noteworthy. This is pleasing, melodic music and a band and singer worth checking out.

"Baillie And The Boys Album Review"

“The Road That Led Me To You” is a whole new direction for the group. This ain’t the Baillie and The Boys you thought you knew. Kathie Baillie has never sounded better, and this new release puts her squarely in the company of vocalists like Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell and Nanci Griffith.

Billboard magazine said of the Cd, “On this well-crafted album, the trio remind everyone of the musical magic that occurs when great songs skilled production and a stunning voice unite.” The review also went on to state. “In a perfect world where exceptional songs and great performances triumph over music biz machinery, this album would by multi-platinum.”

"Love's Funny That Way CD Review"

Fans will remember Kathie as the voice of Baillie and the Boys, who racked up late-’80s and early-’90s hits like “Long Shot” and “Fool Such As I.” Her solo debut finds her still in very fine voice, essaying these 10 tracks with plenty of heart and power. Love’s Funny That Way sticks too closely to the middle of the road, and the lush sound too often obscures Kathie’s voice. But when Kathie soars, as on the haunting “All Fall Down” or a sublime version of Vince Gill’s “Never Knew Lonely” with the author singing harmony, there’s no stopping her.

Kathie Baillie, the former lead singer for the trio Baillie and the Boys, delivers an impressive solo album that by her own admission doesn't fit into a genre. The 10-song disc, however, has songs that fit into the genres of folk, pop, adult contemporary and Christian contemporary. Country, however, isn't one of them. Baillie co-wrote three of the songs, and her husband Michael Bonagura produced.

The two best songs come through with a feel that's more coffee shop than honky tonk. They are the poignant "Old Glass Case" where Baillie is joined by her daughter, Alyssa Bonagura, and former Highway 101 lead singer Paulette Carlson. Baillie also covers Vince Gill's "Never Knew Lonely" with Gill on background vocals. Her version comes across with a folk-tinged feel. The New Jersey-born singer shines on the power ballad "Anchor Me," which uses the metaphor of love to a ship and an ocean.

TOLEDO BLADE
Article published Sunday, March 25, 2007

LOVE'S FUNNY THAT WAY Kathie Baillie (Aspirion Records)
With her first solo effort, Baillie is making her comeback a most welcome event. As the crystal-voiced lead singer of the 80s trio, Baillie and the Boys, she was the heart of six successful country albums and 10 Top-10 hits. Thankfully for fans, her voice is as good as ever.

Baillie got her start singing background for such artists as Dan Seals, Lynn Anderson, Randy Travis, and others. Then, with her future husband Michael Bonagura and pal Alan LeBeouf, formed a group specializing in close harmonies and catchy tunes. After the group's skyrocket with RCA fizzled, Baillie spent a couple years as a co-host and performer on the Nashville Network.

Baillie's sound now, as then, is passionate, with vocals that seem geuninely heartfelt as they wring emotion out of the lyrics. The 10 numbers on this album are, without exception, very good. One special treat is "Old Glass Case," done with Baillie's daughter Alyssa Bonagura and the song's creator, Paulette Carlson. Another worth mention is Vince Gill's "Never Knew Lonely," with a vocal assist from Gill himself.

"All Music Guide Review"

Glancing at the CD case and liner notes, there are no less than 19 photographs of Kathie Baillie on Love's Funny That Way, including one borrowed from the video for "One Thing." There are so many photos that one has to snake his or her way around them to read the album's credits. The largest photo shows Baillie leaning on her acoustic guitar and gazing directly at the camera, giving the impression of an attractive, sincere person who dresses nicely (a bright red shirt to match her auburn hair). In a sense, the professional layout prepares the one for the professional, contemporary country sound of Love's Funny That Way. Baillie's resonant vocals bring a sure footing to the ten well-chosen songs, while the country-flavored arrangements, from the gentle "Each Day I Live" to the harder rocking title cut, provide a solid underpinning. Vince Gill makes a guest vocal appearance on "Never Knew Lonely," a song he penned, and Jim Photoglo adds his vocals to "Gone Away." Adding Gill to any song may seem like a smart career move, but their voices work exceptionally well together, ratcheting up the emotional quality of the song's chorus. Love's Funny That Way is a professional, well-made country album, and will work as a fine introduction to Kathie Baillie. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., All Music Guide

Baillie & The Boys

When you hear the rich three-part harmonies driven by Kathie Baillie’s powerful heartstopping vocals, Michael Bonagura’s soaring guitar and Alan LeBoeuf’s solid bass line, the music of Baillie and The Boys will be forever inscribed on your mind and in your heart.
Baillie and The Boys have released six albums starting with their first for RCA Records in 1987 and including their most recent release “The Road That Led Me To You” on their own Synergy label. The common denominator of all of their releases, however, is the songwriting talents of Kathie Baillie and Michael Bonagura, and that talent is most evident on their latest CD. Seven of the 12 songs are co-written by Kathie and/or Michael, and an eighth song was co-written by Alan LeBoeuf, who had returned to recording and performing with Baillie and The Boys for the first time in ten years.

A live audition for RCA in the early eighties resulted in their first album release. “Oh Heart,” the first single by Baillie and The Boys was a top ten hit and became a trademark song for the group. Over the next four years they released four albums for the label, each to critical acclaim, and containing hit singles like “Long Shot,” “She Deserves You,” “A Fool Such As I,” “I Can’t Turn The Tide” and “Treat Me Like A Stranger.” The success of the music earned them awards and nominations from the Country Music Association, the Academy of Country Music and the TNN/Music City News Awards.

With their recent album and a new direction, Baillie and The Boys are back on the road and back on the radio, bringing music fans more great songs, great vocals and great harmonies. “The Road That Led Me To You” is a comfortable combination of country and folk styles that works anywhere you play it.
