Op sommige immigranten moet je zuinig zijn. De Servische multi- instrumentalist en zanger Slobodan Trkulja, bijvoorbeeld, zou eigenlijk tot nationale kunstschat moeten worden uitgeroepen. In de amper zeven jaar van zijn verblijf in Nederland heeft hij zich ontwikkeld tot een van de sterkste spelers in het grensgebied tussen rock, jazz en Balkanmuziek. Al drie keer achtereen schitterde hij op de Nijmeegse Music Meeting, eerst met de groep Turqumstances, vervolgens in het project Gemengde Noten van de componist Theo Hoek, en daarna met zijn eigen zesmansformatie Balkanópolis. In het laatste half jaar heeft de band zich nog een heel stuk verder ontwikkeld. Trkulja's passie voor ietwat gedateerde jazzrock, die toen het optreden enigszins ontsierde, raakt steeds meer op de achtergrond ten faveure van speelse dwarsverbanden met diverse Balkantradities. Zo greep Trkulja minder vaak naar de tenorsax, en liet hij vooral de rietfluit, de klarinet en de mini-doedelzak jubelen. Een ballade over een onvergetelijk dorpsmeisje werd verrassend gevolgd door een klaaglijke solo op de Armeense duduk. Fijn ook dat er dit keer zo veel gezongen werd. Trkulja blijkt een voortreffelijk vocalist. In een duet met de zanger en percussionist Goran Milosevic werd de microtonale meerstemmigheid van de Macedonische muziek zo perfect uitgevoerd, dat er een bijna hypnotische werking van uitging. Dat de leden van het spetterend samenspelende ensemble ook individueel hun mannetje staan, werd bewezen in spaarzaam gedoseerde solo's. Vooral de basgitarist Vladimir Samardzic liet onwaarschijnlijke staaltjes horen. Maar de opmerkelijkste prestatie werd geleverd door drummer Arie den Boer. Zijn omgang met complexe Balkanritmes - waarbij zelfs een stuk in vijfentwintig- achtste maat - maakt een even moeiteloze als vanzelfsprekende indruk. Het tijdperk waarin 'King' Ferus en Ivo Papasov met hun bands de scepter zwaaiden over de cross over-afdeling van de Balkan, is met de opkomst van Trkulja en Balkanópolis ten einde gelopen. - Volskrant
