Pertunjukan Musik oleh Wukir Suryadi, hari Kamis, 11 November 2010, pukul 20:30 WIB, di Gedung Balai Pemuda Surabaya.

Wukir Suryadi, arek Malang, kelahiran, 27 Desember 197 7 mengawali kiprah berkesenian melalui panggung teater, sebelum akhirnya meleburkan diri ke dalam panggung musik, khususnya musik etnik- kontemporer.

Lelaki kelahiran Malang ini menciptakan alat-alat musiknya secara otodidak. Bambu Wukir sebagai gabungan string dan perkusi. Sebenarnya alat ini merupakan modifikasi instrumen tradisional :Celempung, Sasando, Sittar dan Lakado. Alat-alat tersebut kemudian dikolaborasikan dan berbentuk bambu yang ujungnya runcing di bagian kepala badan instrumen. Alat ini dimainkan dengan cara digesek, dipetik. Alat ini menghasilkan suara dengan karakter baru dan terdengar layaknya Synthesizer yang sudah dimainkan pada band-band post rock di Eropa.

Tak hanya menciptakan alat musik namun ia juga membuat komposisi lagu baik secara improvisasi maupun tertulis. Dengan alat musik dan komposisinya ia sudah malang melintang di berbagai pertunjukan baik musik maupun teater di Jawa, Bali dan Sulawesi. Bahkan di Prancis ia sempat berkolaborasi dengan musisi Prancis serta mengerjakan satu album di Belanda. Meskipun ia tetap jauh dari hiruk pikuk dunia musik dan lebih dikenal di kalangan musik jalanan kontemporer yang seringkali dikaitkan dengan hal bersifat tradisional.

Itulah Wukir Suryadi seorang musisi yang gelisah untuk berkarya. Meskipun Bambu Wukir sudah mampu mencuri perhatian tak hanya di Indonesia bahkan di manca negara ia tak ingin berhenti begitu saja. Kedepan ia masih terus mencari penyempurnaan instrumen tersebut hingga mampu menghasilkan bunyi yang lebih menarik lagi. Seperti prinsip yang ia pegang bambu wukir hanya sebagai terminal sebelum melakukan langkah lebih jauh dan yang lebih penting bambu wukir menjadi terminal dari kegelisahan tanpa batas tentang hidup dan kehidupan itu sendiri.


“Sawang sinawang”

Setiap masyarakat menciptakan dan mengembangkan kebudayaan sebagai sinar yang memandu kehidupan, sesuai dengan lingkungan sosial dan fisik di wilayahnya. Dalam perjalanan waktu, generasi baru muncul dan dibentuk oleh kebudayaan itu agar mewarisi dan mengembangkan sinar kehidupan itu menjadi lebih terang. Meski demikian tidak jarang generasi baru menghadapi tantangan, hambatan dan bahkan tekanan. Sehingga kurang berhasil mengembangkannya. Salah satu hambatan yang paling kuat adalah adanya kebudayaan lain yang tidak toleran dan bahkan melakukan penjajahan budaya. Akibatnya generasi baru tidak hanya gagal mengembangkan tetapi juga mengambil sinar kebudayaan lain untuk memandu kehidupannya.

Upaya menemukan kembali warisan masa lampau yang masih sesuai dengan peri kehidupan masa kini, tentu tidak akan semudah orang Eropa me- renaissance keeropaannya .

Meski sulit dan harus menempuh jarak yang sangat jauh, perjalanan pencarian dan penggalian tentang warisan masa lampau tampaknya harus dilakukan. Kendati harus bermandi keringat dan berkubang lumpur. Salah satu warisannya ialah pepatah “SAWANG SINAWANG”. Pepatah jawa ini sengaja saya ambil sebagai judul dalam Pertunjukan Musik kami di Festival Seni Surabaya 2010 yang mengambil tema Surabaya Experience , karena bagi saya memiliki makna yang sangat dalam.

‘SAWANG’ adalah memandang, menyimak atau memperhatikan. Di sisi lain, SINAWANG dapat diartikan sebagai dipandang, disimak atau diperhatikan.

Aktivitas memandang bukan semata-mata dilakukan oleh panca indera mata. Memandang melibatkan seluruh kemampuan aspek kemanusiaan subyek. Melihat dan mendengar. Akal maupun budi. Melalui proses memandang, subyek mengolah informasi yang diterima melalui mata dengan jalan membandingkan terhadap pengalamannya sebagai individu maupun pengetahuan yang dimilikinya dari berbagai pihak. Dengan kata lain, dalam aktivitas memandang terdapat dialog antara masa lampau (pengalaman dan pengetahuan) dengan masa kini (obyek pandangan). Dialog masa lampau dengan masa kini dalam proses sawang melahirkan dua macam pengetahuan, yaitu pengetahuan tentang obyek dan pengetahuan tentang subyek. Pengetahuan tentang obyek berupa gambaran detail kondisi yang tampak kasat mata, baik secara kuantitatif maupun kualitatif. Selain pengetahuan tentang obyek, proses sawang juga melahirkan pemahaman tentang diri sendiri sebagai subyek. Pemahaman terutama berupa kesadaran baru dalam diri subyek tentang posisinya saat itu. Ketika melakukan proses sawang, subyek memperhitungkan ikatan atau relasinya dengan obyek. Apabila obyek merupakan bagian dari subyek.

Dalam pertunjukan musik “Sawang Sinawang” ini , selain akan dihadirkan sebuah instumen modifikasi dari tradisional yang berwujud instrumens, “Bambu Wukir”, juga akan dihadirkan pula beberapa individu yang memiliki latar belakang musik yang berbeda.

Instrumens “Bambu Wukir” yang juga sedianya akan di kolaborasikan dengan Suluk Malangan. []

BAMBOO WUKIR :

Bamboo Wukir merupakan hasil kreatif seorang Suryadi Wukir yang berupa alat musik bambu,yang secara fisik menyerupai bambu runcing. Bambu tersebut berukuran kurang lebih 1 m,berdiameter 10 cm, dengan senar string 11 buah dan senar kulit bambu hitam 8 buah lengkap dengan alat stemnya yang bisa dimainkan dengan dipetik atau digesek. Dan instrumen ini mampu mengahasilkan bunyian luar biasa,sejumlah bunyi melodik dan perkusi yang unik.Bambu Wukir juga merupakani perpaduan unik dari tradisi Jawa kuno dengan serangan dari kebisingan kontemporer


ENSEMBLE GENDING :

merupakan kelompok gamelan asal Belanda yang telah terbentuk sejak tahun 1988. Meraka berusaha keras mengungkap kualitas tersembunyi dari gamelan dan mereka telah memainkan program tematik yang didalamnya gamelan telah dikombinasikan dengan musik elektronik, perkusi barat, vokal, kuningan,organ bambu besar, dan banyak kombinasi lainnya.

"indonesia as an archipaelago country"

Indonesia as an archipaelago country has a lots of traditional musics ranging from the wild-hard tempo, rhythmic-yet-trance to slowest-ambience tone of sound. There are some contemporary musicians who develop this music to the new form, a fusion. But usually they're come from people who has traditional art background or music academy education. But it's very rare for young people who grew up listening to popular music like pop, rock, or electronic to get into traditional music. It looks so old-fashion and not cool. So, it's very surprising if they play this un-trendy music and yet infuse it with the anger of punk attitude.

Rully Shabara is a frontman and vocalist of Zoo, a math-rock/experimental band based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. In Zoo's latest trilogy album he develop the music direction with traditional music approach by using javanesse language and traditional instrument but still in the vein of punk music. Meanwhile, Wukir Suryadi devoted his life into traditional music even in his teen he also listening to rock and heavy metal (musical genre that very popular in Indonesia back in the '80s). He is best known when he create his own instrument named Bambuwukir by himself. This self-made instrument constructed from bamboo, reminds of the Sasando from Rote, an island part of the East Nusa Tenggara province of the Lesser Sunda Islands. A couple of distinct differences though between Wukir and Sasando music. Firstly, besides plucking the strings on the circular harp, he also bows the strings.



They were met when Wukir played at Yes No Klub gig -a monthly event organized by Yes No Wave Music and Performance Klub in Yogyakarta. Both were found the same interest and strong chemistry, then they start to rehearse a few times and think forward to record their works. The result is a 6 piece of powerful contemporary tribal songs entitled Senyawa and released it for free download at Yes No Wave Music, a netlabel from Indonesia. Different from Zoo, this collaboration more into traditional music feel. Since then, Wukir now join in Zoo and the band begin to write the new album for next year. It will bring the traditional music to young popular music scene in Indonesia and so the rest of the world. Enjoy.

"Wukir, from the Theatre Stage to the Music Performance"

Wukir Suryadi treads the artistic stage from
on place to another. Beginning his
progression in artistry through the theatre,
this child of Malang has ended up fusing this
experience with the performance of
contemporary-ethnic music.
‘I learnt music in the theatre. I had
the opportunity to join Idiot Theatre in
Malang, Youngest Theatre in Surabaya, and
Rendra’s Theatre Workshop in Jakarta’ says
Wukir. Although he set out on his journey
from the theatre, this single man who lives
out the life of the nomadic artist is not free
from musical activities.
‘It just turned out that in the theatre I
became more involved with sound
composition and production. To enrich the
sound in the theatre performance, I could use
any object to make noise’ he said.
4 or 5 years ago, Wukir forged a
musical sensitivity through the theatre, in the
end he decided to sharpen this musical ability
through experimentation. This man who was
born on the 27th of December 1977 made a
musical instrument by recycling found
objects, such as his first instrument, the
‘Gestik’, using the butt of a machine gun.
‘The Gestik is almost the same as the
Rebab, a traditional Javanese two stringed
musical instrument. However because it was
really heavy and difficult to take from place
to place, I ended up thinking to make a
musical instrument that could be plucked or
bowed out of bamboo. What came to be was
the ‘Bambu Wukir’ which I made while I
was in Bali’ said Wukir.
Before the bamboo instrument was
created and given the label of Bamboo
Wukir, Wukir admitted that he worked extra
hard for his instrument to have the ability
and strength to plucked and bowed as if it
were a violin, a rebab, sitar, or a harp.
‘I made the stringed instrument from
bamboo by modifying other stringed
instruments, but this didn’t work straight
away, actually the first 5 or 6 attempts
failed’ he confessed.
The Bambu Wukir was shaped out
of a length of bamboo around about 1 metre
long and about 10 centimetres thick, with 11
nylon strings and 8 strings carved out of the
bamboo’s black bark. The emergence of the
name Bambu Wukir was not free from the
influence of Wukir’s friend from Bandung
Arts High School, Ajan.
‘Many of my friends gave their
opinions about what the instrument should
be called, but from all of my friends
suggestions I thought that Ajan’s was the
one that fit’ he said.
From Festival to Festival
In his recent artistic activities, Wukir has
given birth to an Independent album, called
Atas Nama Bunyi (In the Name of Sound).
Among others the compositions are titled
Spirit from Amer, On the Way to the Ocean,
and Bau Bangkai (Smell of the Corpse).
‘When I was living in Bali, I had the chance
to be invited by friends from Mental Death
to play together’ he explained.
Wukir says he is like a ‘busker’
going from festival stage to festival stage.
Among others he has performed at
Yogyakarta International Gamelan Festival,
Solo International Ethnic Music Festival,
and GWalk Percussion Festival in Surabaya.
Before his ‘busking’ appearance at Gwalk in
Surabaya Wukir’s latest tour with the
Performance Artist Ilham J Baday has taken
him to 18 cities from Malang to Kedire,
Lumajang, Sidoarjo, Semarang, Salitiga,
Yogyakarta, Magelang, Wonosobo, and
Surabaya.
‘For 2 months and 10 days
beginning in April up to July 2009 I have
appeared all around the cities and all over
the place with doing performance art actions
with Ilham J Baday, ending up in Surabaya’.
As he is always moving around as
part of the creative process and living as an
artist, where will Wukir settle down? ‘My
hope is in East Java, in Malang or Surabaya.
But I have a friend who is asking me to live
in Lombok’ stated Wukir. - Kompas

Bio

Bambu Wukir is the product of a unique fusion of ancient Javanese tradition with an onslaught of contemporary noise. The original self-made instrument shaped like a bamboo spear utilizes both percussive strings carved from the bamboo’s skin, and melodic steel strings, bringing together elements of traditional Indonesian instruments with garage guitar distortion.

Schooled in the theatre, Wukir Suryadi brings theatrical ruckus to the classical stage, plucking,
strumming and bowing his way from peaceful meditations to rhythmical frenzies. The evolution of his music is never complete as he utilizes the agility of his instrument to collaborate with musicians and performance artists from around the world, fluently bridging musical styles and inventing new instruments as he goes.
