28N on road to success

Nearly a decade in the making, 28N, with an accessible sound destined for radio airplay, seems to be a band on the cusp of bigger and better things. The trio from Newcomb, N.Y., is arguably one of the best unsigned bands in the country.

Lead guitar/singer Nate Strengrevics has dubbed 28N’s sound “pockternative -- a blend of pop, rock and alternative.” The band credits a variety of early influences, including Coldplay, U2 and The Beatles, but refers to Pearl Jam’s Vitalogy and Live’s Secret Samadhi as the “parents” from which its sound was born.

“When we first started out, we were really into the ’90s rock scene, but now we aren’t exclusive to anything,” explains Strengrevics, adding that band members are currently listening to everything from classic rock to Johnny Cash.

It’s fitting that the band refers to its influences as parental guidance. Strengrevics and Lowell Stringer (drums, backing vocals) began their musical career led by Strengrevics’ father, a music teacher, in the high school’s touring stage band. They formed 28N, with Strengrevics’ brother Kris on bass, in 1997 and acknowledged the power of their beginnings by naming themselves after Route 28 North -- the single highway that runs through their tiny hometown in upstate New York. In 2002, they won a battle of the bands and the opportunity to play in front of thousands, opening for Reel Big Fish at SUNY Fredonia’s FredFest.

28N hit a detour in 2005 when Kris decided to leave the band and move to Chicago. Nate Strengrevics and Stringer auditioned prospective replacements but couldn’t seem to find a perfect fit. Then along came Mike Montanye, a fellow Newcomb native who had also studied under the Strengrevics’ father. Montanye’s enthusiasm for the band inspired a significant change in 28N’s goals, and as he began exploring the intricacies of the bass guitar, the remaining members realized that their road to success had once again led them home.

28N’s commitment to performing live has taken the group on a tour of New England, playing college campuses and bars from Albany to Boston, and the members make a point to perform at least once a month in New York City. At a recent performance at The Bitter End, Strengrevics captivated the audience with his blend of smooth-as-velvet vocals and catchy, insightful lyrics. Stringer maintained a perfect balance between precision and adrenaline-driven abandon on drums, while Montanye mastered the typical unassuming stance of a bass player, while providing an anchor for the band’s sound.

The guys return to the studio this month to finish recording their self-produced and untitled fourth CD. Strengrevics muses that it should be called “NY CD” because the majority of songs were co-written by he and Stringer during their year sharing an apartment in NYC. They plan to release the EP for free, making it available for download on MySpace and possibly iTunes.

This CD is amazing. I tell absolutely everyone about it. You can hear the emotional connection driving every chord, every beat, every note, every word. Each one of these guys is genuinely an amazing musician who has the talent, courage and conviction to really make it big! I have nothing but faith in these guys. Buy their CDs now, have them sign it, add it to your collection of all time favorites and in a few years you'll be able to say you knew them when... I know I will! I listen to this cd by 28n everyday on the way to work and on the way home from work. it wakes me up in the morning and gives me something to look forward to on teh way home. i never get sick of hte music since all the songs have a different tone and beat to them. The best 10$ I ever spent...I have a feelimg im gonna wear this one to death then buy another one. Groove wtih me may be the best song ever..even better than the dive! If you ever saw them live...this is even better...BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT. It only takes about 1-2 days to get shipped to you too. YOu will love this cd. Every song is amazing. For the past ten years in the remote northern town of Newcomb, N.Y., on Route 28N, a three-piece band that takes its name from that very road has been refining its craft.

Brothers Nate and Kris Stengrevics got together with their friend Lowell Stringer in high school and started making noise in a quiet town whose existence most people don’t even know about.

Nate plays guitar and provides vocals, Kris plays bass and Lowell bangs the drums.

The group 28N writes catchy pop/rock music that sounds like it was born on the radio. On the band’s Web site they list groups like Live and Matchbox Twenty ast their primary influences.

Like those bands, 28N blends hooky soft rock songs with smooth crooning vocals. Their sound is immediately familiar but unique enough to distinguish it as their own. These guys sound like they’ve been doing this for a while. They’ve molded their style into something much more sophisticated than what one might expect to hear from a small-town independent band.

I got the chance to see 28N live and in person when they appeared on 8 Trax, the show I host on TV8, last week. They gave me a copy of their six-song CD “This Planet Mercy”. It’s good stuff. It really sounds like it needs to land in the hands of the right record label A&R rep.

I have a couple of favorites from the disc: “Matter of Fact” is a good tune, and “Gold” has just enough of a Beatles and/or Tears for Fears sound.

On the show, they played a great new song called “My Radio”, which does not appear on this CD. The band tells me that they will be recording that song - and others - soon. This time, they’ll be heading to the studio with a new bassist, fellow Newcomber Mike Montanye. Mike joined the band recently, after Kris moved to Chicago.
