Cela débute comme une fanfare de cirque três enlevée, mais tandis que l’auditeur commence à s’habituer, la machine semble dérailler et part quelques instants dans un style beaucoup plus contemporain. Puis les tubas reprennent la rythmique et un violon raméne la mélodie initiale et relance la fanfare. Voici donc un groupe qui pourrait assurer tranquillement (si l’on peut dire) mais qui n’hésite pas à sortir des chemins battus, à prendre quelques risques et tant pis si tout le monde n’est pas convaincu, l’ensemble reste de tout façon trés plaisant et la vie est trop courte pour se contenter de ronronner. Et puis il y a un solide métier derriére tout cela et une belle énergie, en particulier celle que met Claudio Prima dans les parties chantées (il joue également du diato et est le compositeur principal de ce CD qui comporte 4 traditionnels). Certaines orchestrations avec clarinettes me font penser à celles des musiques de N. Piovani et l’ambiance n’est parfois pas si éloignée de celle de certains films des fréres Taviani (“Kaos” par example). Une bonne référence, non? - Trad-Magazine

Contagio is a musical voyage around the shores of the Adriatic. The members of BandAdriatica take this metaphor to heart and they are pictured in the booklet standing on a quayside dressed in sailors' uniforms and look like a ship's crew waiting to board. The lyrics mostly have seafaring imagery and the band takes its musical inspiration from the broad diversity of cultures that can be found around the Adriatic. Pizzica Estam uses the pizzica dance rhythm from Salento in southern Italy, Penza E Ripenza has Balkan rhythmic patterns, there are a couple of traditional Albanian compositions and they even include a traditional song from Crete. In addition to the local styles there are jazz influences in some of the horn arrangements and the solo trombone introduction to To Ghiasemi is based on the Thelonious Monk tune Well You Needn't.
The eight-piece band includes trumpet, trombone, tuba, clarinet, saxophone and percussion, so there is a strong wind band element to its sound, which seems appropriate as it is similar to the instrumentation one would find in local processions and carnivals in these Adriatic towns. Claudio Prima leads the band on accordeon and vocals and renowned Albanian cellist Redi Hasa provides a contrast to the brass and reed instruments. There are also a number of guest musicians, including trumpeter King Naat Veliov (of the Original Kocani Orkestar) and vocalist Maria Mazzotta. This is an interesting project that superbly integrates new composition with roots and demonstrates how easily music can cross national and linguistic barriers.

Das Adriatische Meer ist ein Teil des Mittelmeeres mit Italien,Slowenien, Kroatien, Bosnien und Herzegowina, Montenegro und Albanien als Anrainerstaaten und reicht bis nach Griechenland. Aufgrund der lange währenden politischen Trennung konnten sich die Regionen und deren Kulturen recht unterschiedlich entwickeln.
BandAdriatica haben es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, der vielgestaltigen Musik der Adria-Region nachzuspüren, deren Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede deutlich zu machen. Die Band will ihre CD “Contagio” als eine Reise verstanden wissen. Eine Reise, auf der, bildlich gesprochen, alle Häfen entlang der Adriaküste angelaufen werden. Man bekommt einen unerhört interessanten Stil-und Genremix geboten: Märsche, Tarantellas, slawische Tänze und griechische Lieder in sehr eigenen, neuen Interpretationen.
BandAdriatica stellen die verschiedenen Elemente aber nicht nebeneinander, sondern suchen eine musikalische Sprache, die alle Elemente enthält. Und dieses Ziel haben sie in der Tat erreicht. Das Album stellt eine höchst vergnügliche und unterhaltsame musikalische Reise dar. Los geht es in Brindisi, der Hafenstadt in Apulien, mit einem anfangs noch recht konventionell klingenden Stück für Blaskapelle (wäre da nicht das Cello), doch bereits nach knapp 2 Minuten merkt man, dass hier keine bierselige Kapelle am Werk ist, sondern Vollblutmusiker.
Eines ist klar: Kurzes Anspielen der einzelnen Stücke wäre ein großer Fehler, denn sie entwickeln sich oft so großartig in eine ganz andere Richtung als man zu Beginn vermutet hätte. Wie der Verlauf einer Reise ist auch der Verlauf dieser Musik nicht vorauszusehen. Mal klingen sie wie eine Balkancombo, mal wie eine Jazzband oder ein Tanzorchester, dann wieder wie eine Blaskapelle. “Contagio” ist ein großartiges Album einer vorzüglichen Band. Die Stücke sind meist selbst komponiert, doch es finden sich auch traditionelle Stücke aus den verschiedenen Regionen darunter.
