Bio

Bandits are a four person musical unit spawned on the icy northern shores of Montreal, Canada. They write songs that run the gauntlet from folk to psychedelic to surf to 60’s pop—all ingredients that they use to spice up and forge an intoxicating turkey dinner out of that tried and true recipe; two guitars, bass, drums, keys and love. Bandits are Rock n’ Roll, but in a good way.

The original seed of this musical collaboration was planted when guitarist Yona Prochnik heard drummer Dominique Salameh strumming away and singing a tune of almost other-worldly beauty at a friend’s apartment. The song turned out to be by Cold Play, and Yona realized that if Dom could make even Cold Play sound raw and soulful, the possibilities were endless. There was however much that still needed to happen before the two would be brought together—Yona left school and Montreal to work on trails in New Mexico, spending the weekends homeless in Durango with nothing but an acoustic guitar with which to finance a crippling addiction to gas station burritos, and whiskey. Dom stayed in Montreal using his seductive French to sweet talk customers into signing with Bell, and beautiful Montréal women out of their cloths.

The two were reunited in January 2010 for what were supposed to be just a couple of recording sessions. They soon, however, realized the potential for a true collaboration. During his time away, Yona had written dozens of beautiful acoustic ballads, often utilizing unusual tunings and structures. Dom complemented these with his tasteful, original drumming and beach boy-esque backing vocals, while also contributing his own original songs to the mix (the two share both lead and backing vocal duties). Soon, Ben Bloom, an accomplished bassist with a background in jazz, and Concordia music student Antoine Poliquin (keys, guitar, vocals) were brought on-board to complete the lineup.

One could go on almost endlessly about the number of headlining shows, trashed hotel rooms, broken bicycles and debauched starlets Bandits have left in their wake over the course of their brief career, but wouldn’t you rather just listen to the music?
