Biography

Unconventional, unexpected, unmistakable. Banjovan offers some of the most diverse talent Saskatoon has to offer. Featuring musicians from 3 well established Saskatchewan bands, this project brings something truly unique to the stage.

After spending the last year recording their debut album titled Necessary Documents, the band is gearing up for their CD release party in early March followed by touring of Western Canada throughout 2010 in support of their album.

Ben steps up front from behind the drum kit to front this band with his powerful voice and steady rhythm. Ben has been playing professionally for over 15 years, most notably with local Saskatoon favorites, Rippertrain. He has a great understanding of music and his talent really shines through as the vocalist, lyricist and co-writer.

Jovan picked up the banjo a few years ago and fell in love with it. This is where the name of the band derived from as well as is responsible for the distinguishing trait of BanJovans sound. A self taught banjo player, she merges her guitar skill with the banjo to create a new sound. Jovan is known for her smart and melodic guitar playing which were showcased in bands she played in spanning the last 10 years. She also shows her talent in this project as co-writer.

Reg is a well rounded musician with many different tastes and influences. From his experience playing jazz tuba or singing with an acapella group, to playing bass in local rock bands, Reg is a jack of all trades. He could be best described as an exciting performer with an energy that you just want to be around.

Randy has been a prominent member of the Saskatchewan music scene for years. A man of many talents, not only is he the front man for Absofunkinlutely, but he is also a professional sound engineer and accomplished producer. In this project Randy showcases many of his musical abilities by playing several diverse instruments and providing outstanding harmonies. Randy proved to be essential to the making of the album by providing amazing advice in the studio while engineering and producing a sonically exceptional album.

Kyle brings with him a unique drumming style that compliments and drives home the distinctive sound of BanJovan. His versatility is eminent from fine tuning his skills over many years of performing. Currently the drummer of The Gong Show and previously a member of Touchtone Gurus and 100 Acre Wood, Kyle knows his way around the drum kit and is a solid addition to this incredible line up.

Lyrics

Diamond Road

Written By: Ben Wanner

Verse 1
With a sign, I share my love with you
With a ring, and promises of truth
But many lost their souls
And I can’t go down that diamond road

Chorus
Diamond road
Diamond road

Verse 2
All these diamonds, they come from pain
From war and toil, like the fields of sugar cane
But many lost their lives
There’s hate and strife on that diamond road

Chorus

Verse 3
With a sign, I share my love with you
With a ring, promises of truth
But I’ll give you quarried stone
Cause I can’t go down that diamond road
Down that diamond road
Down that diamond road
Down that diamond road.

Let em Sigh

Written By: Ben Wanner

Verse 1
Time it tells bout smile to face like pals
Who turn to laugh with all the guys and gals
Bout you when you’re gone, but before long
What’s wrong is right and what’s right is wrong
Let em sigh

Verse 2
Some time ago I was keeping score
One and two and three and stopped before
I lost control, my fake was full
Eyes may roll, so what I’ll pay the toll

Chorus
And let em sigh
Let em sigh
Let em sigh
Let em sigh
It’s on me

Verse 3
We dance for those, smiling foes
And live our lives in Emperor’s new clothes
Shelving selves, and helping hells
Rapture, with ringing chapel bells
Oh let em sigh

Verse 4
Some time ago you could count my fate
Four and five and six and seven hate
They can keep their bull before my soul is null
Eyes may roll, so what I’ll pay the toll

Chorus

Flight to Mexico

Written By: Ben Wanner

Verse 1
Well I’m leavin, on a winter’s day
For the fun and sun from the cold I’ll get away
Heart starts to pound before I leave the ground
Don’t like water, you crash you’re done
I look down ya I see Galveston
Gotta racin pulse when we hit the gulf you know
Ya my grip gets tight on that flight to Mexico

Verse2
Somethin ain’t right, the seatbelt light
There’s gonna be some turbulence tonight
Ya my grip gets tight on that flight to Mexico
I hope we land on Yucatan
And not somewhere in the Caribbean
Should have sat by thee emergency, I’m slow
Ya my grip gets tight on that flight to Mexico

Bridge
Lord help me when I go
Have not prayed in 10 years or so
And if I die will you save my soul
My grip gets tight on that flight to Mexico
My grip gets tight on that flight to Mexico

Solo

Bridge
My grip gets tight on that flight to Mexico

Fight With My Lover

Written By: Ben Wanner

Verse 1:
Well you know damn well that I’m talking to you
But you stare the other way with something to prove
That’s cold, yeah that’s cold

And I’m gonna pay anyway
Cause at the end of the day it’s you I want
to hold, but you won’t fold
So I guess it’s time

Chorus 1:
I’m gonna fight with my lover tonight
Gonna curse and swear without a care who’s wrong or right
I’m gonna fight with my lover tonight
Now her taillights are nearly out of sight

Verse 2:
Last time I remember it was late December
Hangin with the boys really raised you temper
So, I should’ve known

Gotta run home soon from this dirty ol’ bar room
Wanna be with my baby even if we fight
Till noon, yeah I’ll be there soon
And I guess it’s time

Chorus 2:
I’m gonna fight with my lover tonight
Gonna curse and swear without a care who’s wrong or right
I’m gonna fight with my lover tonight
Wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t gone and got so tight
In the morning I thought that we would make up in spite
But the feeling’s strong cause she’s going back to her mom’s
House tonight

Verse 3:
Try and pull a quick fix like a son of a bitch
Giver some story but I think that one’s
Been told, yeah it’s old
And I think she knows

Chorus 3:
I’m gonna fight with my lover tonight
Gonna curse and swear without a care who’s wrong or right
I’m gonna fight with my lover tonight
Wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t gone and got so tight
In the morning I thought that we would make up in spite
But her taillights are nearly out of sight
and the feeling’s strong cause she’s going back to her mom’s
House tonight

Hail Dubya

Written By: Ben Wanner

Verse 1
People shaken, they’ve seen warnings, in your eyes
Tower’s fallen, Sam is callin, with his lies

Emotions blinding, flags are flying, we don’t dare defy
Sense is fading, we’ve bin laden, with corporate covered crime

Chorus 1
And now we’re hating for you We’re hating for you
But hate is all the same
And ya we’re hating for you Hail Dubya
We play into your game

Chorus 2
And now we’re hating for you We’re hating for you
But hate is all the same
Cause they’re hating us too We’re playin the fool
The game it hasn’t changed

Verse 2
Smokin us out, with the smoke screen, like John Wayne insane
Kernel Crawford, not much to offer, but so much to gain

People calmin, turn the warning, up to red again
Sounds of warnings, alarming, cause fear is hate’s best friend

Chorus 1
Bridge
Newsman sleeping then it hits me
Nobody wants to be like the Chicks in Dixie
Keep those lips tight Cause might makes right
No eyes to criticize carry on the fight
Chorus 1, Chorus 2

The Worst Time

Written By: Ben Wanner

Verse 1
Drivin fast, dotted yellows just a line,
And now I find that I’m lost in my own mind
Sudden burning, bleeding, bursting, blinding shot of red
The octagon that wasn’t wrong just missed my head
And then I fled, and then I fled

Chorus
This would not be the first time
But this would be the worst time for me

Verse 2
Quickly find a way to cover up the proof
Cause I feel it doesn’t pay to tell the truth
Speeding anxiety is coming after lies
Lucky that I did not close somebody’s eyes
Close your eyes, close your eyes

Chorus

Bridge
Policeman at the door, recognize the sound
Try to hide my breath, but mine’ll come around

Verse 3
Lookin back now on punchin through those gears
I’m still not sure how I made it though those years
I don’t know, I don’t know

You're So Maybe

Written By: Ben Wanner

Verse 1
Got 95 ways to nowhere
Heart on your sleeve, and ya just don’t care
(Now it shows me)
Time to stick and you get stuck
Your horse starts to buck well I guess I’m out of luck
(Now it hurts me)
Alliteration links love to lust
What turns your head when your on the cusp
(Now it hits me)
Drinks from the cup of selfish fire
Keeps your feet movin when you walk a wire
But I tire, I tire

Chorus
Cause your so maybe, you’re so maybe
And now it’s done, before it’s begun
Cause your so maybe, you’re so maybe
And now it’s done, before it’s begun
And I feel this time that I have won
But the painted liar has just begun

Verse 2
Put your money on a pony that’s phony baloney
All that trust is just so skin and boney
(Now it hits me)
Your face wins grace in every place
Wait till your age starts to quick its pace
(now it shows you)
It’s a dire show you know
it’s a dire show you know every time
(You’re around me)
Drinks from the cup of selfish fire
Keeps your feet movin when you walk a wire
But I tire, I tire
Chorus
