Being released is the 7″ dual single Not Innocent/Sticky Sweet Mess from the group’s 5 track EP. The tracks, which both come in at 4 minutes or less, are of a style that is admittedly outwith my usual realm of experience. Straight up, relaxed rock that is full of storytelling candour, the guitars have that warm classic overdriven sound that means you actually need to be able to play, and not just cover it up with a wall of distortion. Surely it can’t only be me that used that tactic? Moving on… it’s so laid back that there’s a definite element of swing infused into Sticky Sweet Mess. Tonight’s line-up includes, Bank of Joy, a velvety laid-back rock, Off Love, a conceptual pop vibe and Savages, current east end buzz band from Denmark.

Bank of Joy, new project by Ralph Philips sets a laid back, 60s feel to the evening. The Japanese lead vocalist wears a golden flowing silk dress in shades that shimmer, and giant shoes. They are interested in the sense of shining people, rather than the money version, ‘a million things to do before we die.. a million ways to shine.’ This is fussy, warm, elegant, laid back rock. They set the scene for the summer festival, Woodstock peace and love vibes shine through. - Sam Chamberlain

On stage first was a young upcoming four piece, Bank Of Joy. Although still very much in the early stages of their career, there are elements that have widespread appeal. Their sound compromises of mainly lo-fi influenced indie rock akin to the likes of Pavement and latter day Blur, whilst trading off between male and female vocals.

Because of the club night’s bizarre pre-requisites, each band are forced to play a Weezer cover. Their choice was “Photograph” off 2001’s Green Album, which they were polite enough to apologise if they had offended Weezer fans in the audience! Look out for these. - Tom Willmott
