Barbara Detch

Barbara Detch

New York City, New York, USA
BandPopSinger/Songwriter

It's as if Carole King and Ben Folds collaborated on a musical and made Missy Higgins the lead.

Biography

Barbara Detch can’t wear high heels. It’s because of this predicament she has been forced to focus on writing catchy lyrics and melodies to grab her audience’s attention – not fancy dances or flashy outfits. Songs like “Dorky Guys are Hot” and “A Song I Don’t Know the Words to (Love)” put Barbara on a level that people can truly relate to – ground level, not 4 inch stiletto level. In a music industry full of divas, it’s refreshing to see an artist who is fully willing to admit her geeky-ness.

Barbara’s music career started in 6th grade when she was the only French Horn player in the school band. Even though she continued playing the French Horn through high school and truly earned the title of “band geek,” Barbara is more well known for her abilities on piano. Barbara, however, isn’t a highly trained pianist. As a teenager, she was more interested in King, Joel, and Folds … not Bach, Mozart, or Liszt. So while Barbara took a couple of years of lessons, the bulk of her training came from trying to figure out how to rock the suburbs.

Barbara has performed in living rooms, basements, restaurants, and bars since she was 14 years old. She grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, but now goes to school at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, where she is studying music business and songwriting. She currently finished in the top 5 to open in Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair and was a finalist to be the opening act for Hanson's Shout It Out tour.

Lyrics

This Time

Written By: Barbara Detch, Kyle Shearer, Adam Sample

So excuse me if I seemed confused,
answered the phone and I heard it was you
Cuz I thought you said goodbye.

Have you forgotten you broke my heart
in the backseat of my first car?
So why can’t you leave me behind?

I know just what you’re thinking
You can call and I’ll come running
but I won’t.

CHORUS
This time, I’m leaving my heart behind
not giving in, not letting you inside.
This time, I’ll be ready to say goodbye.
This time, I’m leaving you behind.

Don’t even think I will fall for your tricks
Your kiss, your eyes are an easy forget.
You’ll see you’re just a memory.
I know just what you’re thinking
you can call and I’ll come running
but I won’t.

CHORUS

I’d be lying if I said I was ok
but I don’t want to be hurt by the same mistake.

CHORUS

A Song I Don't Know the Words to (Love)

Written By: Barbara Detch

Please excuse my nerves, I forgot my words
and I don’t know what to do next.
Many rhymes to choose, scared to make my move
Cuz I don’t got much experience.

Gonna close my eyes, Gotta take my time
As I feel your gaze upon me.
Feeling insecure, my thoughts are unsure
Just need to follow my heartbeat.

CHORUS
(Love) Love is a song I don’t know the words to
(Love) Love’s got me tongue-tied and so confused
(Love) Love’s got a rhythm so brand new
(Love) Love is a song I don’t know the words to

My hands are shaking, confidence fading
As I’m blinded by your spotlight.
I lick my lips cuz it’s hit or miss
When I’ve got these butterflies.

CHORUS

This may not (No, this may not) be perfect
I may sing off tune
But I’m making this up (Yes, I’m making this up)
All for you….

CHORUS

Dorky Guys Are Hot

Written By: Barbara Detch

He sat next to me in Chemistry.
I always thought he was kind of geeky.
Thick Glasses, Bow tie
but he made me laugh all the time.

CHORUS

DORKY GUYS ARE HOT
Every girl should be jealous of what I got.
DORKY GUYS ARE HOT
Go ahead and give one a shot.
He’s not the best socially,
But he makes me happy.
He treats me like a queen.
Guess what?
DORKY GUYS ARE HOT.

He likes holding hands - Buys me flowers.
He can listen to me talk for hours.
Lame jokes, but real smart
Cuz he found a way to my heart.

CHORUS

So what if he likes to watch sci-fi?
I don’t give a damn cuz I’ll watch Star Wars anytime.
So what if he’s in the marching band?
Everyone knows a musician is a real man.

CHORUS

Unheard Melody

Written By: Barbara Detch

2 years ago, everyday
I’d call you up but hang up right away.
Always fighting in my head
Gave up in the end
I was too afraid to say

I turned my feelings off like a radio
never telling you what I wanted you to know.
I kept a secret
but now I wonder if we could have been a hit.

CHORUS

You’re my UNHEARD MELODY.
You’re the song I could never sing.
You’re the line I thought about
but I never spoke out loud.
You’re my UNHEARD MELODY.

I saw you yesterday, nothing’s changed.
I wish you looked bad, but you looked great.
We exchanged ‘how do you dos’
and when it was through
I let you get away again.

I turned my feelings off like a radio
never telling you what I wanted you to know.
I kept a secret
but now I wonder if we could have been a hit.

CHORUS

I got you stuck in my head.
I got you stuck in my head.
I got you stuck in my head.
I got you stuck in my head.

CHORUS
