Bio
Barbara Detch can’t wear high heels. It’s because of this predicament she has been forced to focus on writing catchy lyrics and melodies to grab her audience’s attention – not fancy dances or flashy outfits. Songs like “Dorky Guys are Hot” and “A Song I Don’t Know the Words to (Love)” put Barbara on a level that people can truly relate to – ground level, not 4 inch stiletto level. In a music industry full of divas, it’s refreshing to see an artist who is fully willing to admit her geeky-ness.
Barbara’s music career started in 6th grade when she was the only French Horn player in the school band. Even though she continued playing the French Horn through high school and truly earned the title of “band geek,” Barbara is more well known for her abilities on piano. Barbara, however, isn’t a highly trained pianist. As a teenager, she was more interested in King, Joel, and Folds … not Bach, Mozart, or Liszt. So while Barbara took a couple of years of lessons, the bulk of her training came from trying to figure out how to rock the suburbs.
Barbara has performed in living rooms, basements, restaurants, and bars since she was 14 years old. She grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, but now goes to school at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, where she is studying music business and songwriting. She currently finished in the top 5 to open in Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair and was a finalist to be the opening act for Hanson's Shout It Out tour.
