TRILHA, TOADA E TRUPÉ
BARCA

Barca was created in 1998 when some friends got together to discuss things like trips, popular music, Brazil and Mário de Andrade. The Modernist writer’s study led the group to dive into some of the countless popular artistic Brazilian manifestations and establish links with several communities. Believing that traditional culture is a fundamental material in the Brazilian artist formation and the raw material for a universal artistic creation, Barca tries to comprehensively reflect on the role of art in the traditional communities. And starting from this reflection on the artistic performance and its social and esthetic responsibilities, it has been carrying out a wide work of concert production, document collection, art education and cultural production.

From December 2004 to February 2005, Barca traveled more than 10,000 km, across 9 Brazilian states, from Pará to São Paulo, with the Turista Aprendiz Project, sponsored by Petrobrás. The group visited around 30 communities or cities, ranging from quilombos (hideouts from runaway slaves) to indigenous hamlets to the suburbs of big capital cities, passing by small towns placed along rivers, on the seacoast and in the countryside. In addition to set in motion the local culture by providing options for education and entertainment, and to make unprecedented records of these manifestations, the project drew the attention of the official bodies by giving visibility to the artistic work of those groups.

Those communities – many of them living in a state of poverty and exclusion – cultivate an enormous artistic inheritance perpetuated by oral tradition. A precious repertoire that is mixed and then distinguished by the sculpture made by the time/memory of its artists, but because of the new means becomes subject to forgetfulness, prejudice and dissolution. The record of these manifestations not only tries to reveal the several Brazis to the Brazilian people, but also allow that these products are returned to their communities. The encounter of traditional communities with contemporary artists brings along the risk and grace of improvisation and experimentation, and proposes the attempt to discover a third way for the music-making activity, in which the limits such as erudite and popular culture, tradition and contemporaneity, sacred and profane, devotion and entertainment are broken.

A typical work day of the group started with workshops in the morning. Then, in the afternoon, audio and video recordings, and Barca concerts in the evenings, whether on squares, sports courts, schools, and pavilions or even in the middle of the street, having as guests the registered communities. The same activities were carried out in the big cities, where foundations, art schools and theater houses were mobilized so as workshops could be provided and concerts could be performed. The project drew large interest from the press, resulting in a wide coverage in the newspapers and TV stations all over the country.

The large collection gathered, which includes 300-hour video and audio recordings and 6 thousand photos, shows an exuberant and vigorous culture, in which its artists’ talent and vitality of tradition reveal diversity and identity in a contemporary Brazil. The box Trilha, Toada e Trupé puts together the best of this collection in two CDs dedicated to the regional groups and artists. The third CD features Barca studio recordings (before and after the trip) and also some tracks recorded live in the trip concerts with the featuring of several artists. Finally, the Turista Aprendiz DVD portraits the whole experience of the Project in a poetic record once again guided by Mário de Andrade. Prepare your ears, voice, feet and heart in order to follow this path with us.

“They'd better done what I did, known what I loved, picking up in arid lands, poor lands, rich zones and wonderful landscapes, this unique kind of reality in which I persist through all esthetical theories and which is the very reason of the first Art: the collective soul of a people.” Mário de Andrade
