World Action Rock music with social, political, environmental themes. Internal combustion fresh and passionate with open-style collaboration. Sounds like a stew of: Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, seasoned with 'dengue' fever! Thought and dance are the guiding force.

Biography

BIOGRAPHY: Barely2Much

Musicians who weave social and environmental commentary into their lyrics are fairly easy to find.

On the other hand, it is quite difficult to find a musician that believes in their message so fervently it becomes an extension of their life’s work and makes it impossible to separate the artist from the art and the issue from the life.

So, to fully appreciate the story and musical journey of Michael Guapolinda . One must consider the stark reality of commercial practices ravaging the environment in a small corner of the world.

This self-described “activist, convictionist, and no-jive-ist” (and harmonica player) is part of a music and visual arts collective working to reverse the ravages of clear-cutting in the Tropical Dry forest on a remote peninsula in Costa Rica.

“The insane cattle ranching practices and logging had created tremendous loss of animal habitat on the peninsula,” he says. “It supports the North American fast food industry, but has devastated this region.”

He cites eclectic musical influences ranging from Fats Domino and Little Richard to Tom Petty and Tool. And, while he quips that the inspiration for his music crawls through their screened windows in the jungle, it is clear that he is one of very few musical artists in the world who so profoundly live the experiences that shape their art.

“What influences my music is my past and present life and the lives and conditions of others,” he notes. “Our life and its edge give us inspiration.”

In their new CD, Guapolinda, Barely2Much is true to its international origins. Guapolinda is joined by Wales’ David Paradise (mandolin, acoustic, slide guitar); Minnezuma’s Punky Wheaton (vocals, dance, synthesizer); Costa Rica’s Maria Pretiz (vocals), Sergio Pacheco (bass, formerly of Gatos Callajeros), and Pipo Chavez (percussion, drums, and CD co-producer); and Patrick Skidd (acoustic/electric guitar, vocals) of Canada.

The group creates a lush soundscape evocative of the melodic complexity of Pink Floyd and the innovative phrasing of Peter Gabiel, while delivering “bundles of points.” Guapolinda S. weaves hard-hitting messages into tracks like “More Michael Moore” and “Bushwhacker” in a context that is pure, clean environmental/political/social-themed dance music. It is a CD filled with energy and conviction that’s as alive as the increasingly verdant surroundings of this group’s world and its village.

The group is creating and performing during a “dynamic” period in the music industry, according to Guapolinda , who adds, “There are no musical rules or genre rigidity. With meaningful social and environmental musical themes, and a willingness to move, dance, and party, I believe we will carve a greater and greater niche in the protest social music rock world.”

TIME AND PLACE

Written By: Michael Striebel

TIME AND PLACE

It is the time and place, for us to contemplate the world in which we live;
The air and breath it brings, the life it gives all things, this can change anytime
For those who wonder when, just ask our Brother Ben,
His face is our new god

CHORUS: Well I wonder, yes I’m searching, where our hearts have gone (2X)

So when the drama starts, and systems fall apart, the time has come to pay,
Well we can move ahead slow, or we can fucking let it go, our kids, our kids
Will pay the price

CHORUS

It’s been a mindless ride, digesting this Madison jive, truth and awareness on ice
The earth is rumbling about, her guts we’re tearing out – are we comfortable,
Comfortable, yet, please ?!

CHORUS

MORE MICHAEL MOORE

Written By: Michael Striebel

MORE MICHAEL MOORE

More, Michael Moore, we want more, of what’s deplorable in
America;
Use your words to pacify the turds, Michael Moore, what’s it all
For?

CHORUS: It’s not what we stand for, it’s not what we adore, Michael Moore (2X)

Fuck we got so much, you know we got so much

It’s not what we dreamed of, it’s not what we conceived of Michael Moore
Gun-thencity is our creed, it doesn’t have a thing to do with greed;
Guns are fun if you have one, the NRA taking our lives away!

CHORUS

Explore Michael Moore, explore, we want more
Bring us all the gore we adore, Michael Moore

More Michael Moore, getting us behind locked doors,
Do you really want to see more, Michael Moore? (2X)

BUSHWACKER

Written By: Michael Striebel

BUSHWACKER
Oh Mr. Bush, Mr. BushWhat’s wrong with me?
It’s late at night and thoughts are troubling me
Oh Mr. Bush, Mr. Bush
What’s wrong with me?

CHORUS: How can you help? It’s nothing you have felt

Bushwacker, Bushwacker why don’t you go your way?

Take your family and friends for an extended holiday!

You might as well take special interest too!
Their time is done, and long over due!

CHORUS

Oh Mr. Bush, Mr. Bush
What’s wrong with me?
It’s late at night and thoughts are troubling me
Oh Mr. Bush, Mr. Bush
What’s wrong with me?

400 BILLION

Written By: Michael Striebel

$400 BILLION

If you’re the winner, why pay more
What’s it all for? You’ve won the war!
The power of $400 billion,
Believe me Bush, would thrill millions!

CHORUS: Suppress and squeeze your human brother,
And you’ll be fucking with something other!

Give a shit about everyone’s fate?
Say, aren’t you the big popentate?

U.S. and world humanity
What’s with your self-centered vanity?

CHORUS

Fuck defense, it’s in our best interest
Use the funds to silence the guns

Explosion – destruction – mayhem
Don’t you see what you’re saying?

CHORUS
Repeat 1st verse
CHORUS

MINNESOTA NIGHTS

Written By: Michael Striebel

MINNESOTA NIGHTS

Moms and Dads, and brothers in the ‘hood
Minnesota nights ain’t gonna be so good
Carrying guns as a last resort
Something’s saying to me, this ain’t no sport.
CHORUS: There’s more fear in living, are we all paranoid?
There’s more fear in living, are we all paranoid?

These subtle acts of legislative ills,
Brings apathy to the front, and puts rust on the wheels

Progress is rolling at an unstoppable pace,
Special interest is there, with a hand in our face?

CHORUS

Moms and Dads, and brothers in the ‘hood
Minnesota nights ain’t gonna be so good

Carrying guns as a last resort
Something’s saying to me, this ain’t no sport.

SHARK FIN SOUP

Written By: Michael Striebel

Puntarenas at dawn
Looking for Jimmy Hon
Gettin’ him some fins
Some soup for them
Sharks are under attack!
You know, you know they can’t fight back!

Secret meetings at dawn
All there and then gone
Looking for shark fins
Some soup for them

There’s a bounty on their heads
Bodies, bodies left for dead

Shark fin soup
Such a rugged group
Brings you action in your pants
Yea, well, fat chance!

There’s a bounty on their heads
Bodies, bodies left for dead

HARP BREAK

Puntarenas at dawn
Looking for Jimmy Hon
Gettin’ him some fins
Some soup for them

Sharks are under attack!
You know, you know they can’t fight back!

GUITAR BREAK

Puntarenas at dawn
The sharks, they’re all gone
No more shark fins
No more soup for them

We are all under attack
Will we, will we ever fight back!
