"Barley Wik; Beyond the Down"

Too bad Robert Altman and Garrison Keillor didn't know about Barley Wik when they were putting together A Prairie Home Companion, as Barley Wik's down-home, neo-bluegrass sound would've been an ideal match for the cinematic celebration of all things hayseed. And I'm pleased to report their latest, 12-track Beyond The Down, is by far the strongest of their three-disc library; the harmonies are tighter, the melodies more toe-tapping, the instrumentation cleaner and the overall production is smooyh without being too slick. As such, Beyond the Down should well be Barley Wik's passport to greater acclaim. On the down side, this week's CD launch also marks their farewell to the Island (another act too talented to stay here?), but at least they're going out with style. - Monday Magazine, Victoria BC

"Barley Wik"

With their new album, Beyond the Down, Barley Wik offers a heady mix of down home country, bluegrass and spirituals with a strong pop sensibility- landing them somewhere between The Dixie Chicks and The Eagles. - The View, Hamilton Ontario

"Calgary Country"

This summer it was Victoria B.C based all girl band by the name of Barley Wik. Having not heard or seen these gals before, it was such a treat to meet them and enjoy the unusual talents these four ladies posses. They perform traditional country, bluegrass and gospel music and are top notch musicians. - Country Music News Magazine, Calgary AB

Bio

"With rich harmonies, steady train grooves and incredible stage vibe, Barley Wik displays an incredible knowledge of roots music that mixes bluegrass with folk, hints of gospel and a whole lotta attitude...." Jason Valleau, The Polyjesters, Music Director of the Mountain View Music Fest

Barley Wik sing like angels and play an array of acoustic instruments like they sold their souls to the devil. The all- female band reinvents old-time music with an impressive collection of well crafted original songs that reshape folk and country with a little twist of bluegrass.

Barley Wik's sound reflects a musical style as diverse as their individual histories and landscapes. The prairie roots of Saskatchewan, the East influences of small town Ontario, the British style of the 60's and a strong tie to the land culminate in a style and lyrical content that is uniquely Barley Wik. Old-time country, folk, blues, bluegrass and spirituals, inspire Barley Wik's songs. All members are song writers and each bring a creative honesty to their music making which keeps it real.
