HOW BAR MITZVAH HOOK UP WAS BIRTHED
Bar Mitzvah Hook Up began when bass player Paul Chistofferson purchased pro-tools and invited singer-songwriter, Bryan Cohen to write. The duo knew how to write songs and play almost all the instruments but they needed a spark.
The spark came at that first session when Bryan played a guitar riff over a drum machine beat and Paul added 80’s keyboards. The song sounded like the hottie bastard child of Prince, Wall of Voodoo and The Tubes. Off kilter, dancy, nerdy, twitchy, and funky…..Bar Mitzvah Hook Up was born.
SARAH RUDINOFF’S VOCALS ARE KILLER
Paul and Bryan continued to meet two or three times a week to write and record. They realized that beats, synthesizers and massively overdubbed guitars were just not enough radness. They needed a blast of soul. They called vocalist Sarah Rudinoff (We Are Golden). Sarah showed up and sang on one chorus. It was like an airplane taking off through the monitors. Sarah was in.
DAVIS MARTIN PUTS UP WITH BRYAN AT LONDON BRIDGE STUDIOS
With Sarah’s knockout vocals loaded onto the songs Paul and Bryan headed to Seattle’s London Bridge Studios to add drums and mix the first five tracks with producer Jonathan Plum. At the studio Davis Martin, drummer of Maktub and LeRoy Martiz Bell, added funky drums to the five tracks. Davis was kind enough to indulge Bryan’s request for more disco high hat. Finally Bryan and Paul asked their friend Trevor Rassmusen to add saxophone to a few tracks. The first five Bar Mitzvah Hook Up songs were completed.
WHAT’S WRONG WITH BEING SEXY…SOUNDS LIKE?
The first five songs from Bar Mitzvah Hook Up sound like Bryan and Paul went back in time to 1983 and harnessed the energy of 50, 13 year olds dancing to The Time played through a tape deck and then went to the present adding old school hip hop, toy pianos, fuzzed out guitars, synths run through guitar effects with lyrics about fucking, smoking weed, bisexuality, atomic bombs, summers, dancing and being a bad ass. To early listeners, Bar Mitzvah Hook Up reminds them of Tears for Fears, ABC, Depeche Mode, Run DMC, Gorillaz, Beck, Bay City Rollers, Talking Heads, U2 and Black Eyed Peas having a Jersey Shore level party with audio slices of Blade Runner, Star Blazers, Apocalypse Now and Cheech n’ Chong rolled in for good luck.
Frankly all the members of Bar Mitzvah Hook Up care about is that their music makes people happy.
Last piece of critical information: at least one member of Bar Mitzvah Hook Up actually did hook up at his/her brothers Bar Mitzvah in a bathroom. Get to know Bar Mitzvah Hook Up and they may tell you who.
As one friend put it when Bryan told her the band name, “Even non-Jews hook up at Bar Mitzvah’s.”
