Barna Howard

BandFolkCountry

Missouri’s clearest voice since a certain steamboat pilot, Barna Howard is a meticulous craftsman. His are songwriters’ songs, weaving melody, narrative and gravity in ways only the best have. He comes to the listener like some overlooked great, reincarnated for one last shot.

Horizons Fade

Written By: Barna Howard

Horizons fade in a rear view mirror,
To let me know that I have gone.
I feel it now, up in my chest,
For the people I have known for so long.
Well, sometimes I go home, just to see them,
We pour a strong one, then we’re right back again.
Well, it’s good to know they’re there,
To tell me how it’s been.

In the hills of ole Missouri,
A woman’s life is looking dim.
While grandma watches “Wheel of Fortune,”
Because she knows that her’s is already well spent.
Well, even though she’s gone, I can hear her laugh,
Yeah, it won’t be long, till I hear it coming back.
Well, I know that she’d be pleased,
To know that it will last.

I once had someone on my mind,
Until I carved her name into a tree.
Because who could find a pretty knife,
Sharp enough for what we’d need?
Well, things will look a lot better, when they ain’t looking down,
So take a deep breath, watch the people walking around.
Well, I hope it won’t be long,
Till she pulls me to the ground.

Out on the road, heading toward the city,
I open up my eyes wide now,
Because I know it ain’t make believe,
But children always seem so proud.
With one step to make, and one shoe to shine,
If I find a friend, I’ll probably be fine.
Well, I think I just got caught,
In another nine to five.

Promise, I Won't Laugh

Written By: Barna Howard

Tell me what you’re thinking, I promise, I won’t laugh,
There ain’t no laughter here, anymore.
Can’t you tell I’m lost, by the way I reappear,
Wishing on the words you’d said before.

While time went by, things got good,
Even though we’d changed our plans.
I’d thank you now, if I could,
For tossing me to the wind.
Ain’t it funny what you can find,
Between the lines of a goodbye kiss.

Well, if I go to see you, in a New York catacomb,
I’m sure I’d probably feel the same.
But don’t say you’re sorry, even though you’ve heard me try,
There ain’t no sense in forgiving pain.

While time went by, things got good,
Even though we’d changed our plans.
I’d thank you now, if I could,
For tossing me to the wind.
Ain’t it funny what you can find,
Between the lines of a goodbye kiss.

So tell me what you’re thinking,
I promise, I won’t laugh.
