"Weekend concerts celebrate CD releases"

Barry Kingston and the Screaming Souls will celebrate the release of "Screaming Souls IV" at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday night with a 7 p.m. show. The concert will be held in the hall's auditorium.

This is the sixth studio record to go along with a live recording that Kingston has released since the breakup of The Breakdown in the late 1990s.

The "IV" in the title would seem to be a reference to the seminal Led Zeppelin 1971 release unofficially titled "IV" that has been a constant, if subtle, influence on Kingston since he began playing music. The songs have a heavy Zeppelin flair both sonically and stylistically and Kingston seems as comfortable with the work as anything he has done.

The CD also marks the return of bass player Chris Kingston, who last collaborated with his brother in the Breakdown days. The younger Kingston gets writing credits on the 10-song disc.

Whether it comes from the familiarity of working with kin, the return to rock roots, or a combination of the two, "Screaming Souls IV" represents the best material Kingston has released in years. To qualify, his post-Breakdown career has included songs that have been featured on MTV's "Real World" and part of the broadcast of Sydney, Australia, Summer Olymipic Games.

There are several moments where the band is shredding and Kingston' voice is soaring that seem truly inspired, the most you could ask of any artist. Highlights of the disc include "After," which breaks from the classic rock sound and delves into a U2-like spirituality, and the poignant "What I've Got," that closes out the project. - The Republican, Donnie Moorhouse
